Altena Castle and the history of wire-making offer two distinctive ways to explore Altena’s past. The world’s first youth hostel opened at the castle in 1914. Wire has been drawn in Altena and the surrounding region since the 16th century. What began as a laborious craft developed into an industry that continues to shape Altena today.

The Castle and Wire-Making History

At the German Wire Museum, wire production, past and present, is explained in an engaging way under the motto “From Chain Mail to Superconductor.” The hands-on museum also invites visitors to try things out: many exhibits can be explored, and interactive stations offer opportunities to take part. Alongside the history of wire, the focus is on discovering things for yourself.

The Wider Setting: Märkischer Kreis

In the broader travel destination of Märkischer Kreis, Altena Castle is a monument of national importance. The so-called Osemunde iron is part of the regional background to the history of wire-making: it was used as a raw material in the Sauerland wire industry. Because this iron was exceptionally soft, it could be drawn into fine wire.

Traces of Jewish life are also part of Altena’s history: Tallenbrink, synagogues and the Jewish cemetery are among these testimonies. The South Westphalia Iron Route passes through Altena and makes South Westphalia’s industrial heritage accessible to visitors of all ages.

Explore the Outdoors and Solve Puzzles Together

The approximately 3 km-long history and nature trail begins opposite Altena Castle and leads to a circular route along the Altena Heights. Information boards explain the local animal and plant life. Sculptures, model displays and a tipi add to the experience. As well as offering a chance to get some exercise, the trail provides specific reasons to take a closer look at nature along the way.

On the treasure hunt, participants explore Altena’s town centre with Knight Eberhard, solve puzzles and search for treasure. The activity is suitable for children aged 6 and over. It combines solving puzzles together with taking a look around the town—a different way to discover Altena than through its castle and industrial history.

Paddle, Hike and Reach the Castle

From May to October, Altenaer-Canu-Verein e.V. offers “After-Work Paddling” from 6 to 8 pm on the first Tuesday of every month. Check with the club for the date before taking part. The club also offers various taster courses for beginners and advanced paddlers; ask them about current availability.

One hiking option leads from Altena to Hemer or Neuenrade; you can take the bus for the return journey. Check the current timetables when planning your trip. The Erlebnisaufzug takes visitors directly up to Altena Castle. If you plan to use it during your visit, check its current operating status before setting out.

Use Experiences to Guide Your Accommodation Search

When looking for accommodation in Altena, you can start by thinking about which experiences you want to shape your trip. The castle and wire museum focus on history and technology, the trail on local animal and plant life, and the treasure hunt on solving puzzles together. For paddling, bear in mind the season and monthly date; if you go hiking, the bus journey back may also need to be part of your plans.
