Halver combines culture and activity: Villa Wippermann houses the “Oben an der Volme” regional museum. A circular route along the town boundary, a high ropes course and the fitness trail in the Herpine recreation area offer a different focus. This gives you a choice of interests when planning your trip—with exhibitions on one hand and trails and recreational activities on the other.

Culture at Villa Wippermann

Villa Wippermann houses the “Oben an der Volme” regional museum. Special exhibitions are regularly held on the ground floor, covering art, crafts or documentary subjects. This brings a museum and changing exhibition themes together in one place. If you would like to include cultural visits in your plans, check the current exhibition dates in advance.

Active options in Halver

The “Rund um Halver” circular route runs for 54.6 kilometres along the town boundary. Its length makes it a tour in its own right. Halver also has a high ropes course, and the Herpine recreation area includes a fitness trail. The options therefore differ in form: a longer route along the town boundary, a high ropes course and a trail for exercise. You can decide which one should shape your stay based on the type of activity you want to focus on. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Cultural and landscape destinations in the Märkischer Kreis

Other places and attractions in the Märkischer Kreis each offer something different. Altena Castle is a monument of national importance and was the site of the world’s first—and therefore oldest—permanent youth hostel. The German Wire Museum explores the history of wire technology as well as its social, economic and cultural history. As an interactive museum, it shows how wire was made in the past and is made today; hands-on stations invite visitors to take part. The Luisenhütte offers a different story of production: this visitor-oriented museum shows how iron was made there and then processed into cast products. The Balver Cave is one of Europe’s most important sites for finds from the cultures of the Middle Palaeolithic, thanks to its archaeological material.

The landscape of the Märkischer Kreis also offers discoveries of its own. At the Felsenmeer in Hemer, impressive rock formations have been shaped over centuries by wind, water and human influence. The site is also one of the oldest iron ore mining areas in Westphalia. The Felsenmeer can only be visited via designated paths; the signposted panoramic trail leads to viewpoints. Check trail access and safety requirements before your visit.

Cycling route and museum railway in the Märkischer Kreis

The Märkische Höhlenroute follows the well-signposted “Radeln nach Zahlen” numbered junction network and offers several access points along the route. The signs and various entry points help cyclists choose and navigate a section of the route.

On certain days, the Sauerländer Kleinbahn museum train carries visitors between Hüinghausen and Köbbinghauser Hammer in restored carriages. On operating days between May and October, the journey passes through the landscape of the Elsetal valley. Check the timetable before planning your trip. Outside the published operating times, special steam or diesel services can be booked; check current availability and conditions.
