Baumberg is a place to explore Roman history, Rhine fishing and protected landscapes. Roman finds in former fort walls, the history of fishing and paths through floodplains offer a variety of experiences. You can plan culture and nature as separate focal points of your trip—or prepare to switch between the two with your family.

Roman traces and Baumberg’s history

The Roman Museum Haus Bürgel presents Roman archaeological finds in eight exhibition rooms within the former fort walls. Haus Bürgel is located in the Urdenbacher Kämpe nature reserve in the Baumberg district of Monheim. The exhibition thus connects the finds with the historic site where they are displayed.

The Catholic Church of St. Dionysius also tells the story of the district’s long history: its 34-metre-high tower was probably built in the mid-13th century. A linden tree on Kirchberg is also estimated to be around 260 years old. It is protected as a natural monument. The medieval tower and the old tree offer two very different ways to explore Baumberg’s history and nature.

Until the 20th century, Rhine fishing, agriculture, goat breeding and traditional crafts such as basket weaving shaped life in Baumberg. The Eel Fishing Museum draws on the history of fishing: it is housed on the historic eel fishing boat “Fiat Voluntas” and conveys both the history of Rhine fishing and everyday life aboard an eel fishing boat. This gives a former livelihood a tangible connection to a historic vessel.

Please note the current restriction when planning your visit: the Eel Fishing Museum is closed until further notice due to construction work. The museum car park is also currently unavailable because of the work. Check the latest status before setting off, as the construction situation may change.

Explore floodplains and cycling routes

The Baumberg Discovery Loop leads through the Baumberger Aue nature reserve. The route is weather-dependent, so take the weather conditions into account when planning. This lets you explore the natural landscape as a focus in its own right alongside Baumberg’s historical attractions, without having to combine the two experiences into a fixed itinerary.

There are also two different reasons to go cycling: the City-Country-River Tour is a circular route where you can explore the natural landscape around the districts of Monheim and Baumberg. The Monheim-Baumberg after-work cycling tour takes place every Thursday at 6 p.m. from May to September. Check the specific dates and possible cancellations in advance. This lets you choose between a tour to explore the landscape and a seasonal after-work ride.

Plan your stay around your interests

A weekly market is held in the Baumberg district every Friday; the date may change on public holidays. Together with the historical attractions and cycling routes, it offers another reason to discover Baumberg beyond a single sight. If you are planning a trip with your family, you can decide together whether local history, nature or a mix of the two should shape your stay.

This helps you focus your search on the kind of stay you want in Baumberg without assuming a particular type of accommodation. Whether you are mainly interested in Roman history and local traditions or would rather spend your time exploring the floodplains and cycling routes, choosing what interests you will help you plan a trip that suits you.
