Discover Fenke
Accommodation in Fenke
Fenke draws attention to unusually specific traces of quarrying: the Fenke 1, Fenke 2 and Fenke 3 quarries differ in their dimensions and present-day condition. There is also the signposted “Around Lindlar” circular trail, which can, for example, be started at the car park on Wiesenstraße in Fenke. For your travel planning, it is worth considering these topics separately: the trail is suitable for a cycling tour, while the quarry descriptions show different sizes and conditions. The wider destination of Lindlar offers additional attractions, including a park, a themed trail and fossil hunting.
Quarries with different shapes
The dimensions give a clear sense of scale: Fenke 2 quarry covers an area of 50 × 20 metres. Fenke 1 quarry is a small, filled-in and levelled quarry measuring approximately 30 × 20 metres. At 150 × 35 metres, Fenke 3 is a larger quarry; a newer path divides it into two areas. The quarry face, which is still about 5 metres high, runs along the slope and is interrupted several times by infill and spoil heaps. The three descriptions therefore differ not only in scale, but also in the condition of the quarry workings and the layout of the site.
Circular trail and possible starting point in Fenke
The “Around Lindlar” circular trail is marked along its entire route with a black “L” on a white background. It runs mostly along pleasant, well-maintained forest tracks, with singletrack making up only a small proportion of the route. The trail is suitable for cycling, and its described profile helps you gauge the kind of route to expect. One possible starting point in Fenke is the car park on Wiesenstraße. From there, the access route follows Neuefelder Straße and Wolfskuhlstraße to the signposted trail.
Fenke also offers a specific option for celebrations: the Rot-Weiß Fenke 1964 e.V. carnival club makes its clubhouse available on straightforward and flexible terms. If you are planning a celebration there, confirm availability in advance.
Lindlar as a separate day-trip destination
In the wider destination of Lindlar, the Freizeitpark is a 5.6-hectare public park. An accessible network of walking paths runs alongside an idyllic pond. The park also has an adventure playground with a tyre swing, slide, zip line and climbing castle. Alongside its quarries and trails, Lindlar therefore also offers a park with walking paths and play facilities.
The 6.2-kilometre Steinhauerpfad circular trail, Bergischer Streifzug No. 8, leads from the centre of Lindlar to the quarries at Brungerst. There are eight information boards and two audio stations along the route. Guided walks are also offered, with background information about quarries, greywacke and the oldest forest in the world. Before making plans, check the current dates and booking conditions for guided walks.
Another option in Lindlar is fossil hunting in the quarries: visitors can search large blocks of stone with a hammer and chisel for fossils millions of years old. This activity is available to groups and families daily from April through October, except on Sundays and public holidays. Bear the seasonal period in mind and check dates and booking conditions in advance.
For travellers with motorhomes, the wider destination of Lindlar has two free motorhome pitches at the Freizeitpark and Parkbad respectively. They are close to the Lindlar open-air museum and Lindlar’s historic centre. Facilities include a pay-as-you-go electricity connection and water and wastewater services. Check current availability before your arrival.
