Elspe combines a summer stage program with a long church history, pilgrim routes and hiking destinations. In summer, Elspe Festival hosts the Karl May Festival; the Wallburg Tower and other routes also shape ideas for a trip. You can plan a visit to Elspe around a festival, a hike or a discovery of its cultural history, depending on your interests. If you want to combine different interests for your family, it helps to consider the festival date, route and viewpoint as separate planning elements.

Church History and Pilgrim Tradition

A church stood in Elspe before the year 1000, probably as early as the 9th century. The parish church of St. James the Elder is located directly on the HeidenstraĂźe and the Roman Road. You can get a pilgrim stamp there before and after Holy Mass. If the stamp is part of your visit, plan around a church service and check the current Mass times. This keeps the visit requirement in mind as you discover Elspe not only for its hiking and viewpoints, but also for its pilgrim tradition.

Hiking Trails of Different Lengths

The St. Clare of Assisi Trail starts at the church of St. James the Elder in Elspe and is about 8 km long. For comparison, there is also the 4.2 km A13 circular hiking trail, which runs along the Fröndenberg and through the “Melbecke and Rübenkamp” nature reserve. The “Circular Hiking Tip Around Elspe” is longer, at about 12.5 km, and starts at the Kirchloh hiking car park. The three routes therefore differ in both length and their starting points and named landmarks—useful guidance when choosing a tour by distance and starting point.

Other routes place Elspe along different itineraries. The Sauerland Camino, a section of the European Way of St. James from Korbach/Marsberg to Meinerzhagen, passes directly through Elspe. The Lennestadt Tour follows the Lenne to Elspe and back to Altenhundem. While the Camino is a route section that passes through the town, the Lennestadt Tour describes a connection between Elspe and Altenhundem along the river. These differences help you identify routes by their course, rather than looking at their names alone.

Views from the Wallburg Tower and Vitus Chapel

The Wallburg Tower stands on the 481 m-high Weilenscheid near Lennestadt-Elspe. The 14.50 m-high observation tower was built entirely of wood in 1997; after 60 steps, you reach its viewing platform. The tower’s height and number of steps give this viewpoint a distinctive character. The Vitus Chapel offers a different perspective, with its splendid view over the Elspetal. This gives you two viewpoints with different features to choose from: the platform at the tower after the climb, or the view over the valley from the chapel.

Elspe as a Starting Point for Your Accommodation Search

When looking for accommodation in Elspe, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: a summer date for the festival, a particular hiking trail, the pilgrim stamp or a viewpoint. For a hiking trip, you can use the starting point and length of your chosen route as a guide. The St. Clare of Assisi Trail starts at the church of St. James the Elder, while the Circular Hiking Tip starts at the Kirchloh hiking car park. This lets you choose accommodation based on the kind of stay you have in mind, without requiring all your activities to have the same focus.
