Oberwinter on the Rhine: Half-timbered houses, churches and trails
Accommodation in Oberwinter
Oberwinter is a village on the Rhine whose character is defined by its well-maintained half-timbered historic centre, churches from different periods, and trails for hiking and cycling. There is also a marina and a viewpoint overlooking the village. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by thinking about what you want your stay to focus on: arriving by train, architectural history, activities along the Rhine or views from above. These interests offer different ways to shape your visit, without requiring you to limit yourself to just one type of outing.
Arriving by train
Oberwinter is on the Cologne–Koblenz railway line. Only local trains stop at the station. If you are travelling by ICE or IC, you will need to change in Bonn or Remagen; the onward journey from there to Oberwinter takes just a few minutes. This transfer is part of planning a journey that combines long-distance and regional rail services. Check the connections and departure times that suit your travel date.
Half-timbered houses and churches from two periods
Much of the historic centre on the Rhine consists of well-maintained half-timbered houses. The churches also reflect different historical and architectural influences. St. Laurentius was built as a Romanesque rural church as early as the 11th century. The Protestant Church is a Baroque court church, built in a courtyard in 1723. Its exterior sandstone portal features floral reliefs, Greek columns and angels. Oberwinter thus has both a Romanesque church from the 11th century and a much later Baroque court church. Those interested in architectural styles will find two distinct examples within the village streetscape.
Hiking and cycling along the Rhine
Oberwinter is directly on the RheinBurgenWeg trail. The route runs from nearby Rolandsbogen to the Mäuseturm near Bingen. Another option is the literary hiking trail L3, the Humboldtweg: it starts at a car park on the B9 right next to the marina and leads to the Friedrichsberg viewpoint. From there, you can look out over Oberwinter. For hiking, you can choose between a long route with named endpoints and a trail leading to a particular viewpoint. If you prefer cycling, you can ride from Oberwinter along the Rhine to Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Remagen or Sinzig. Hiking and cycling therefore offer different ways to enjoy your stay around the river.
Marina and art on the harbour wall
Oberwinter Marina is located at Rhine kilometre 639 and offers berths and moorings to yachts passing through. It can accommodate boats up to 34 metres long. The sculpture “Regenfänger” by artist Eberhard Bosslet stands on the harbour wall. Bosslet created it in 2001 from construction equipment. Its maritime theme and the artwork add another distinctive point of interest to the village’s historic buildings and trails.
Which accommodation suits your plans?
If travellers in your group have different interests, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your time together. If travelling by train is important, factor the station and transfers in Bonn or Remagen into your plans; for hiking or cycling days, the routes and destinations described may help you decide. Then check the location of a specific accommodation in relation to your plans. This way, you can choose a location based on what you would like to experience in Oberwinter.
