Wimbach: Forest, Meadows and Nürburgring
Accommodation in Wimbach
Wimbach combines a hillside setting surrounded by woodland and meadows with its immediate proximity to the Nürburgring. Hiking, cycling and motorsport are among the leisure activities in and around the village. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you would like your days to focus more on the landscape and outdoor activities or on being close to motorsport. This makes it easier to see how well Wimbach as an overnight base suits your travel interests.
Hiking through meadows and woodland
One specific hiking option is the Müllenwirft Loop. It starts at the Hubertushütte hiking car park in Wimbach and passes through a natural and cultural landscape shaped by meadows and woodland, within the extensive Obere Ahr-Hocheifel nature conservation project. The route is marked throughout with its route logo. One section descends for 4.2 kilometres along the Wirftbach stream to the Kottenborn Mill. The loop also reaches the Kottenborner Schweiz ridge, which offers a striking panoramic view.
Along the Müllenwirft Loop, the Barweiler Mill offers a place to stop for a break and refreshments. If you plan to stop there, check in advance whether it will be open during your visit. The stream, ridge and changing landscape of meadows and woodland provide different landmarks to help you plan your hiking day.
Local history and the Nürburgring
Wimbach was first mentioned in a document issued by Count Gerhard of Are/Nürburg on 25 May 1216 and is associated with a former noble residence. Another historical landmark is the Swedish Cross, dating from 1638. It stands within Wimbach’s municipal area, beside the Nürburgring Nordschleife; a section of the Nordschleife is also assigned to Wimbach. The document and the cross mark two different points in time: a medieval mention and a monument from the 17th century.

Culture and routes in the wider Ahrweiler travel destination
If you also include Ahrweiler in your travel plans, you will find other distinct attractions there. In Ahrweiler, the House of the Marksmen displays art-historical treasures from the past three centuries, including uniforms, photographic documentation and historical marksmen’s rifles. Visitors to the Roman Villa at Silberberg in Ahrweiler can view a model of the Roman estate and an audiovisual presentation. Since 2002, the three Ahrweiler marksmen’s associations have operated a museum; visits are possible by arrangement. In the district of Ahrweiler, the Red Wine Hiking Trail and numerous marked local routes add to the hiking network. The Rhine Cycle Route and the Ahr Cycle Route are cycling routes with which the district particularly appeals to cycle tourists.
