Dackenheim combines viticulture and village history; its traces range from prehistoric finds to preserved Romanesque features of the church. The Liebesbrunnen vineyard site and the ornate houses and gates also tell the story of a place whose history unfolds across different periods. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of interests, including cultural history, viticulture and golf.

Village History and Architecture

Dackenheim was first mentioned in 768 as “Dagatisheim.” By 1160, five monastic estates had grown into a village. These dates mark two different stages: the early written record and the later development from estates into a village. The Catholic church dates from the 12th century and was formerly associated with Höningen Abbey. Its surviving Romanesque features include a three-story chancel tower and an eastern apse. Visitors interested in the artwork can obtain the key from the adjoining rectory.

Numerous richly decorated houses and gates bearing carved dates reflect Dackenheim’s economic prosperity in the 16th century. Archaeological evidence reaches back even further: archaeologists found evidence of a Hallstatt-period settlement dating from 1200 to 800 BC in the Dackenheim vineyard “Liebesbrunnen.” A Late Celtic grave with a non-religious head relief is dated to the 2nd to 1st century BC.

Viticulture as Part of the Village’s Character

Almost 20 wineries cultivate a total of around 230 hectares of vineyards. Half of the wineries sell their wine directly. Liebesbrunnen is described as Dackenheim’s most important vineyard site; Riesling and Silvaner grow there. The number of wineries and the vineyard area describe the scale of viticulture, while the named site and its grape varieties offer specific details. This gives you a way to explore the subject both in terms of its scale and through a particular vineyard and its varieties.

Golf on the Edge of the Haardt

The Deutsche WeinstraĂźe Golf Garden lies on the sunny edge of the Haardt. Public golf and club rental are available; check the availability of rental clubs before your visit. This offers another possible focus for planning your trip, alongside local history and viticulture.
