Kallstadt lies directly on the German Wine Route at the foot of the Haardt. Winegrowing, a distinctive townscape and trails into the surrounding countryside give the town its varied character. You can combine a stay with wine and local history, or focus on individual hikes.

Wine Country and Saumagen

The vineyards cover around 270 hectares; Kallstadt’s wine country also includes the top Saumagen vineyard site. The name Saumagen is also associated locally with a culinary speciality served in restaurants. Specific restaurant offerings may change. The Saumagenkerwe wine festival is held every year in early September. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the current festival dates.

By arrangement, the Kallstadt winegrowers’ cooperative offers guided wine tastings, cellar tours and vineyard walks. Prior arrangements are required, and the offerings may change. This gives you the opportunity to include winegrowing in your stay not only through the landscape, but also with a pre-arranged tasting or tour.

Half-timbered Houses, Wine Estates and St. Salvator

The many half-timbered houses and wine estates are among the main sights. The wine arbors at Saumagenplatz are a particular highlight. Those interested in architectural history can find specific details at St. Salvator Church: it dates from 1772 and has a 36-metre-high tower. Its Gothic base and Baroque slate spire bring together different architectural styles; the church also houses an organ by Geib, an organ builder from SaarbrĂĽcken.

A historic fountain with a trough, guarded by the Kallstadt lion, is also part of the townscape. The Villa am Weilberg archaeological site lies on the outskirts of Kallstadt. Information boards and exhibits explain the former Roman wine estate; excavated sarcophagi are also on display there. Check access to the site locally.

Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

Hikes in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park can start from Kallstadt. The Saumagen Trail climbs gently from Kallstadt to the Saumagen vineyard site and offers views towards the Rhine Plain and the Odenwald. Check trail conditions and waymarking before setting out. Another option is the Kallstadt–Villa am Weilberg–Bad Dürkheim circular trail: it passes through vineyards on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, runs mainly on paved paths and partly on natural trails, and has no significant climbs.

The trail from Kallstadt to Herxheim am Berg starts at Platz der 100 Weine and follows the upper edge of the Felsenberg. From there, the view stretches across the Haardt foothills and the Rhine Plain. The Palatinate Almond Trail passes the entrance to the Berntal/Felsenberg nature reserve before continuing to Kallstadt. The routes therefore differ not only in their course: the Saumagen Trail focuses on the vineyard site of the same name, the circular trail combines vineyards with different trail surfaces, and the route to Herxheim offers views from the Felsenberg.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation Search

The Kallstadt Wine Hiking Trail information lists bus route 453 from the direction of Bad Dürkheim or Grünstadt to the Kallstadt/Kirche stop. Check the connection before travelling. Parking at Platz der 100 Weine is time-limited; no time limit is indicated at the cemetery. Kallstadt’s i-Punkt is the town’s Tourist Information Centre on the German Wine Route. Check current opening hours before your trip.

When choosing accommodation, it helps to start by considering the days you have planned: if wine country, the townscape and hikes from Kallstadt are to shape your stay, include the town in your accommodation search. If a specific route or the Saumagenkerwe is the deciding factor, plan around its starting point or date.
