Hergenfeld: Hiking between forests and vineyards
Accommodation in Hergenfeld
Hiking the Cuckoo Trail
The Cuckoo Trail reveals Hergenfeld as a varied hiking landscape. It connects forests and woodland edges with rolling meadows and fields, small valleys and vineyards. Along the way, there are also views towards the Nahe hills, Bad Kreuznach and Rheinhessen, as well as the Donnersberg and the HunsrĂĽck/Soonwald. The alternation between wooded sections and open spaces makes the landscape varied along the route. Depending on the season, individual views and trail conditions may change.
The Cuckoo Trail passes through Hergenfeld’s vineyards and the Limbach Valley. There, a shady spot by the stream offers a place to pause. Shy wildlife may occasionally be spotted, although sightings are not guaranteed. The vineyards and a shady rest beside the stream provide different highlights along the way and offer more than one perspective on the landscape.
The Cuckoo Trail is an easy 7.9-kilometre circular route with 210 metres of ascent and 210 metres of descent. It takes approximately two to three hours to walk. This makes it easy to plan the route as a main activity for the day; the stated time is a guide only. The route is accessible via the A61/Windesheim route, and parking is available at the sports ground. As route information may change locally, check the current trail route before setting off.
Culture and other experiences in the wider Bad Kreuznach destination
In the wider Bad Kreuznach destination, Hergenfeld’s hiking landscape is complemented by architectural history and museums. The bridge houses in Bad Kreuznach were built from 1480 onwards due to a lack of space. These half-timbered buildings stand on the piers of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. The structure brings together two distinctly different periods of construction.
Since 1985/86, the museums of the city of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor, which is set in a historic park. The orgel ART Museum in Windesheim offers a different cultural experience: it is a musical instrument museum and unique of its kind in Germany. These examples offer a different focus from a hike on the Cuckoo Trail and provide points of interest for visitors interested in architectural and cultural history.
For an active summer outing, the wider Bad Kreuznach destination offers the barefoot path in Bad Sobernheim. This 3.5-kilometre footpath leads to the Nahe and includes, among other things, a clay-treading basin, an obstacle course and a variety of ground surfaces. This is a different kind of experience from the several-hour circular hike through Hergenfeld’s landscape: here, the path itself and its varied surfaces are the main attraction.
