Kirschroth combines viticulture with wooded areas and a circular trail through fields, forests and vineyards. The village has around 80 hectares of vineyards and 284 hectares of forest. At 260 metres above sea level, Kirschroth is one of the highest-altitude wine-growing communities in Rhineland-Palatinate. This offers visitors several ways to explore the area: hikes along the Fox Trail, the local wine-growing tradition and a church whose history dates back to an earlier chapel.

The Fox Trail: A circular route with views

The Fox Trail is a circular hiking route around Kirschroth that passes through fields, forests and vineyards. It starts at the community hall in the village centre, where parking is available. The route climbs to an elevation of 450 metres. From there, the view extends across the Nahe Valley and the North Palatine Uplands and, on a clear day, as far as the Hunsrück. There are numerous rest stops along the way. The hike therefore includes both a climb and opportunities to take a break.

Before setting off, check the route details and parking situation at the community hall. The climb to 450 metres and the many rest stops give you concrete points to consider when planning your hiking day. If you would like to spend more time outdoors after the hike, other activities include vineyard walks and bike rides along the Nahe, with the campervan site as a starting point.

Viticulture and local history

Viticulture has been part of life in Kirschroth for generations. Locally grown varieties include Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Dornfelder, Pinot Noir, Rivaner, Bacchus and Regent. The soils, climate and wine-growing tradition shape the character of the wines. Viticulture is evident both in the vineyards and in the range of grape varieties. After a hike along the Fox Trail, you can stop at wineries and local establishments, provided their current opening hours allow for a visit. Check them in advance.

The village’s history can also be traced through specific landmarks. Kirschroth was first mentioned in 1364 under the name “Rodde”. Agriculture remained predominant alongside viticulture until the 20th century. Kirschroth Church was built in 1850 as a late-classical hall church made of red sandstone. A late-Gothic sacrament niche from an earlier chapel has been preserved in the tower. The church building thus brings together the 19th century and an older element of local church history.

Stay overnight with your camper

Travellers with their own vehicle can stay at a campervan site in Kirschroth, between vineyards, fields and forests. It has space for up to four large motorhomes or trailers. The site is also a starting point for the Fox Trail, walks through the vineyards and bike rides along the Nahe. There is a playground and a large football pitch right beside the site.

Electricity is available for a fee; fresh water is available at the nearby community centre. Check current capacity, facilities and fees before you arrive. This can help you decide whether the site is a suitable base for a stay with your own vehicle, while the circular trail and local vineyards offer ideas for spending time outdoors.
