Meckenbach offers different ways to enjoy a stay: longer hiking trails, nature observation and local history with tangible traces in its buildings and archaeology. The distance and elevation figures help with your planning; you can then decide whether outdoor activities or historical topics should be the main focus.

Hiking trails between the Roman road and Hellberg

The “Around Meckenbach” circular trail is 15 km long and has 425 metres of elevation gain. It follows the Old Roman Road and passes the panoramic pavilion, the Thick Oak, the airfield, Pfarrers Bänkelche, the sports ground and the meadow path; it also reaches Meckenbacher Höhe airfield and Hellberg. The route is described as moderate, but a good level of fitness is required. If you are planning together with travel companions of differing activity levels, the distance and elevation figures can help you agree on the day’s itinerary. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

The Hildegard of Bingen Pilgrimage Route also passes through Meckenbach between Kirn and Hochstetten-Johannisberg. Check the trail conditions before setting out here, too. The panoramic pavilion, renovated in 2024, offers a place to rest. The circular trail also reaches a small viewpoint on Hellberg, with a bench where you can take a break.

Nature and views along the trails

On the ridge towards Hellberg, the circular trail enters a nature reserve. Hellberg nature reserve near Kirn covers 44.4 hectares and was designated in 1942. The route offers views of Meckenbach and the surrounding mountains and forests. From a larger open area, you can see Kirn and the Nahe; the view also extends across the Nahe Valley to the Soonwald.

In spring, pasqueflowers bloom in a meadow along the route; they are considered rare in the area. Please do not pick the flowers. Towards Hochstädten, the route passes a pasture with Highland cattle; whether the animals are there can vary.

Airfield and aviation

At Meckenbacher Höhe airfield, you can watch aircraft activity, especially on summer weekends; current activity may vary. The airfield can be reached by car via Hochstetten-Dhaun. Scenic flights for visitors may offer views over the Hunsrück, the Nahe region and the northern Palatinate; whether a flight is possible depends on the weather and operating conditions.

Church and archaeological history

The church in Meckenbach is a plain ashlar building with a tower on the eastern side and a Romanesque portal. Its founding is traditionally dated to 976. Wall paintings from around 1250 depict scenes connected with the Crusades, the Magi and Saint Christopher. The church also has an organ by the Stumm brothers, dating from 1836, which was restored in 1981.

Archaeological traces in Meckenbach include square stone urns from one of the 36 burial mounds at Schmidts Eich, copper slag and entrances to former copper mines. In one historical interpretation, evidence of copper smelting is associated with settlement in Celtic times.

Cultural context in the wider Bad Kreuznach destination

In the wider Bad Kreuznach destination, the bridge houses represent a distinctive architectural history: the half-timbered buildings were erected on the piers of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. The houses themselves were built from 1480 onwards because of a lack of space.

Getting here and starting point
