Birkenfeld appeals to travellers looking to combine culture, history and regional cuisine with experiences in nature. In town, the museum takes visitors far back in time; the castle and castle ruins offer other historical perspectives. When planning your holiday, it helps to distinguish between exploring Birkenfeld itself and discovering the trails and landscapes in the wider Birkenfeld destination. The following options offer different ways to do both.

History and Views of the Town

The museum in Birkenfeld covers 2,500 years of regional history. Its exhibitions explore the Celtic heritage, the Principality of Birkenfeld and its connection to the Bavarian royal family, an old classroom, and the region’s iron industry. Guided tours and school programmes are available by arrangement.

Birkenfeld’s Neoclassical palace was built from 1819 to 1821. The castle ruins offer a different historical perspective: the historic gate, parts of the curtain wall and a viewing tower have been preserved. From the tower, you can look out over Birkenfeld and the Hochwald. The Schellenmann town walk, with its audio stations, focuses on life in Birkenfeld around 150 years ago.

Out and About, with a Swim Break

For cycling tours, the RadLust HimmelReich loop starts in Birkenfeld. The RadLust WasserTräume loop also begins there. It crosses bridges and passes through Abentheuer, by a historic ironworks, then runs along the edge of the national park on the old Erzweg towards the Saarland border.

Birkenfeld has a heated outdoor swimming pool with six 50-metre lanes, a non-swimmers’ pool and a children’s pool. Check current access arrangements before you travel.

Regional Cuisine

Spießbraten, cooked over an open beechwood fire, is a regional speciality in Birkenfeld district. Another culinary highlight is the ProBIRkiste, a regional gift selection featuring specialities from local producers. The Birkenfelder Originale range includes products made from orchard fruit, such as Rotäpfelchen apple jelly, apple juices, Seccos, spirits and apple vinegar. The selection and availability of gift boxes and products may change.

In the Wider Birkenfeld Destination

A section of the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig runs through the Birkenfeld municipal association, which also includes part of the HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park. In the wider Birkenfeld region, the natural landscape is shaped by slope bogs, ancient beeches growing on block scree slopes and extensive forests. These landscapes provide habitats for species such as ospreys, black storks, dragonflies and orchids.

The routes offer a range of experiences, too. The 2.5-kilometre Götterallee between Schwollen and Leisel features ten colourful, life-size figures of gods. The Obere Nahe Water Experience Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach is one kilometre long and has four access points. It introduces visitors to the diversity of aquatic life in the Upper Nahe, as well as waterbirds and dragonflies. The Götterallee showcases public art in the form of its figures of gods; the Water Experience Trail focuses on the aquatic world of the Upper Nahe.

The Traumschleifen in the wider Birkenfeld area are certified premium hiking trails. Check the current route status before setting out. This will help you choose between town history, cycling routes, hiking trails and nature experiences in the wider Birkenfeld destination.

Getting Around the Wider Birkenfeld Area

The Nahetal railway provides access via NeubrĂĽcke regional station, with services from Frankfurt/Mainz and SaarbrĂĽcken. Buses connect villages, hiking trails and the national park across the wider Birkenfeld area; they are listed as running every one to two hours. Check the current timetable before travelling. The Nahesteig runs right past NeubrĂĽcke station; the tourism office recommends taking the RE 3 to get there.
