Discover Veitsrodt
Accommodation in Veitsrodt
Veitsrodt is shaped by a long-established market tradition. Hiking and cultural attractions can also be discovered in the surrounding area and in the wider Birkenfeld travel destination. When planning your accommodation, it helps to decide on your main focus first: would you like to plan your visit around the Prämienmarkt in July, or put hiking and regional discoveries at the centre of your trip?
Market Tradition and Outings in the Great Outdoors
Held each July, the Prämienmarkt combines a street market with fairground rides, culinary offerings, horse races and animal awards. The result is a varied market programme with something to suit different interests. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the market dates and programme details in advance.
Near Veitsrodt, the Wildenburg area near Kempfeld offers a different focus for an outing. Attractions include a Celtic ring wall, a wildlife enclosure with a circular trail of approximately 3 km, opportunities to observe and feed the animals, and marked hiking trails. An adventure playground for children adds a distinctive feature to the area. This makes it possible to take nature, exercise and a historical point of interest into account together when planning your visit.
The Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig is a hiking route. Between Mettlach and Idar-Oberstein, it offers varied trails through forests, uplands and meadows, as well as panoramic landscapes. If you include the trail in your trip, check the specific access points and current trail conditions locally.
Cultural Traces of the Region
A regional stone guestbook brings together signed and named stones along a wooded hiking trail. The collection combines a walk with a series of personal inscriptions on stone. The Nahe Valley near Fischbach offers a historical glimpse into another aspect of the region: until the Napoleonic era, one of the largest and most important copper mines in western Germany was located there.
More Nature and Culture Destinations in the Wider Birkenfeld Travel Destination
Part of HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park lies within the Birkenfeld collective municipality. Cultural attractions in the wider travel destination include the Birkenfeld State Museum. Its permanent exhibitions cover the Celts and Romans, Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbachs, the ironworks industry in Birkenfeld district, an old classroom from around 1930, and the Oldenburg period. A visit to the museum is also recommended for the Birkenfeld section of the Nahe Cycle Route.
The 2.5-kilometre Götterallee between the local municipalities of Schwollen and Leisel brings art into the landscape: ten colourful, life-size figures of gods line the route. Nature trails cover a range of different themes. The 1-kilometre Obere Nahe Water Experience Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach has four access points and introduces visitors to the diversity of aquatic life, including barbel and gudgeon. There are also waterbirds such as kingfishers and dippers, as well as dragonfly species such as the common bluetail damselfly and the river clubtail.
The “In the Land of Kites, Storks and Co.” nature trail has 18 stations around Niederhambach, Schmißberg and Rimsberg. Near Schmißberg, it includes an aviary with the stork pair Lotte and Bernie; the trail also provides information about the habitats of red kites, black storks and other species. The 1.6-kilometre National Park Island Tour around Börfink and Thranenweier offers a different focus on nature. Information boards cover the rare and endangered arnica meadows, how they formed and how they are preserved, as well as biodiversity.
For a cycling tour, the RadLust-Schleife WasserTräume follows its own route: it starts in Birkenfeld, passes through Brücken and Abentheuer, goes by a historic ironworks and follows the edge of the national park along the old Erzweg towards the Saarland border. The cycle route section of the Nahe Cycle Route passes the Environmental Campus in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach and then continues to Birkenfeld. The Ochsenbruch, a species-rich moor between Börfink and the Erbeskopf, is another of the region’s landscape features and gave the Börfinker Ochsentour its name.
