Schauren: Organs, Church Art and Gemstone Craftsmanship
Accommodation in Schauren
Schauren combines a remarkable church history with an organ tradition, gemstone craftsmanship and hiking trails through woods and meadows. You can shape your stay around culture, nature and discoveries in the village.
Church History Spanning Several Eras
The large bell in Schauren’s church was cast as early as 1480; the church building was constructed in 1767 to plans by Schauren carpenter Johann Nicolaus Wenz. A Stumm organ from 1780 in a Rococo case adds to the interior. These dates give a visit to the church a special sense of historical depth: the bell, building and organ come from different eras.
The architectural details are also striking. All the roof surfaces are covered with locally quarried slate. Schauren’s church is considered the only example among the characteristic churches of the Hunsrück to have been preserved completely in its original form. The German Foundation for Monument Protection provided €10,000 for the restoration of the ceiling paintings in the two western bays above the organ. Several prehistoric graves in the Schauren area point to possible settlement beginnings in the early Celtic Iron Age.
Organ Music and Hiking Trails
Schauren is a stop on the STUMM Organ Trail. The hiking route links woodland and meadow landscapes with historic Stumm organs. An audio library makes it possible to hear the organs even when the churches are closed. This makes the organ trail a distinctive way to experience the musical tradition: listening is not limited to times when a church is open.
The Stumm Ironworks Trail is a separate route. The route page dated June 30, 2026 describes it as a 15.5-kilometre premium hiking trail in the HunsrĂĽck. The trail passes through the Upper Nahe FFH conservation area and combines views from the plateau with wooded valleys and stream valleys. TalstraĂźe 2 is listed as an access point from Schauren; the trail entrance is about 500 metres away. The route is accessible by public transport. Before setting out, check transport connections as well as current route details and certification.
Gemstone Craftsmanship and Village Life
Schauren is associated with a long tradition of gemstone processing. Of the many gemstone businesses that once operated here, only a few have survived the changes in the craft. Visitors are welcome to look around the gemstone workshops and exhibition rooms. This offers a glimpse of the craft that complements the village’s church and organ history.
A group hike is also part of what’s on offer: the Schauren Heritage and Cultural Association holds the village walk “Around Schauren,” followed by a social gathering on May 1. As this is an association programme, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
Accommodation and Trip Planning
Schauren has two inns and a campsite offering accommodation and food. Check availability before your trip. When choosing where to stay, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the church and its organ history, the gemstone attractions or the hiking trails.
More to Explore in the Wider Birkenfeld Destination
In the wider Birkenfeld destination, the Birkenfeld State Museum has permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans; Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbachs; ironworks in the Birkenfeld district; an old classroom from around 1930; and the Oldenburg era. These add further regional themes to the village’s history.
The 2.5-kilometre Gods’ Avenue between Schwollen and Leisel offers a different experience. It features ten life-size, colourful figures of gods. The museum and art trail thus offer different cultural points of interest in the wider Birkenfeld destination.
