Fischbach combines a striking hiking landscape with many layers of local history. The local municipality belongs to the Enkenbach-Alsenborn collective municipality in the district of Kaiserslautern. The collective municipality’s area lies at the scenic transition between the Palatinate Forest and the North Palatine Uplands. If you enjoy combining hikes with historical discoveries, you will find a range of starting points here for planning your trip.

Hiking Trails and Themed Discoveries

Fischbach is part of a 60-kilometre hiking trail network created jointly with Hochspeyer, Enkenbach-Alsenborn and Mehlingen. The sports ground on Frontalstraße in Fischbach is listed as a starting point for the Mönchsweg. Signage and access conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The Mönchsweg I offers places to stop for refreshments in Fischbach. If you are planning a break, check what is specifically available in advance.

In the Hochspeyer area, the Mönchsweg includes two hiking routes of approximately 12 and 13.5 kilometres. Their different lengths make it easier to compare the desired hike distance. The trail also has plenty to offer in terms of history: its historical evidence ranges from prehistory to almost the present day, including Roman and early modern traces. The “Rätselhafte Zeitzeichen” network links more than 50 stations. Here, the focus is on the sequence of stations, whereas the Mönchsweg highlights the lengths of its two hiking routes.

The collective municipality has an extensive network of hiking trails, including local circular routes and the Leinbachtal scenic recreation area. The wider collective municipality is also home to the Mehlinger Heide, a nature and bird reserve with information boards and a heathland nature trail. For cycling tours, the Alsenz Valley Cycle Route is an option within the collective municipality; Hochspeyer is also home to an access point to the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park. Frankenstein Castle and churches in the collective municipality can also be visited inside or viewed from the outside.

Traces of Local History

Fischbach was first mentioned in 1221 in connection with the transfer of the parish church of Hochspeyer and Fischbach’s Marienkapelle (Chapel of St. Mary) to Höningen Abbey. A convent for women was founded in Fischbach in 1471 and occupied by Augustinian canonesses from Lippstadt. The lordship of Diemerstein is also historically linked to Fischbach. These early connections give local history a range of facets: ecclesiastical institutions, the founding of a convent and ties to a lordship.

Altenhof, a settlement associated with Fischbach, was formerly called Hetzelbach and belonged to Burg Diemerstein as an estate in the 15th century. In 1576, Fischbach’s holdings served as an agricultural estate with sheep farming.
