Discover Erdesbach: Gorge Trail and Glan Landscape
Accommodation in Erdesbach
Erdesbach invites you to discover nature trails, riverside scenery, and local history. The 7 Gorges Trail leads through a nature reserve to a ridge with panoramic views. Donkey hikes offer another way to explore the Palatinate Uplands at a leisurely pace. There is also the Glan, a rail-bike route along a former railway line, and glimpses into the history of the village.
Hiking the 7 Gorges Trail
The 7 Gorges Trail starts and ends in the center of Erdesbach, where an information board marks the route. The hiking trail is eight kilometers long and runs through a protected natural area to a ridge with panoramic views. Along the way is the old Erdesbach Mill, with its weir and a fish ladder built in 2013. The scenery along this route therefore combines natural surroundings with historic infrastructure.
The trail runs mostly on natural paths and includes around 310 meters of elevation gain. A certain level of fitness and suitable footwear are needed. The route figures also offer a concrete comparison with a donkey-hike option over the Wartekopf: at eight kilometers, the 7 Gorges Trail is shorter than this approximately ten-kilometer tour, but has more elevation gain, at around 310 meters compared with its 250 meters.
Donkey Hikes and Valley Trails
Eseltour Erdesbach offers donkey hikes that let you explore the Palatinate Uplands at a relaxed pace. Tours take place by appointment. The offer also includes short, partially accessible valley trails suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Confirm which route is available when arranging your visit. Another possible tour option goes over the Wartekopf and covers around ten kilometers with 250 meters of elevation gain.
The Glan, Rail-Bike Route, and Landscape
The Glan flows through Erdesbach. The rail-bike route also connects the village with its landscape: it follows the former railway line from Lauterecken to Altenglan, passes through the village, and runs alongside the old Erdesbach railway station there. If you plan to take a rail-bike trip, check the timetable in advance.
Another landmark in the landscape is the Kimmelingschlucht, with its small waterfall. It forms the boundary between Erdesbach and Ulmet and separates the Erdesbach and Ulmet sections of Rummelswald. The Veldenz Hiking Trail also descends to Erdesbach before reaching the Wartekopf nature reserve. This makes the village a destination for individual hikes as well as a stop along a longer hiking route.
Local History and Regional Discoveries
Erdesbach was first mentioned in a document in 1364. Café Veldenzer Mühle displays a historic classroom and a miniature world. The former school building offers another glimpse of the village’s old school: a local report from 2019 mentions school desks, blackboards, and other historic items from the school’s former operation. The current display may change.
A culinary hike is another way to discover the surrounding area. On the Rathsweiler–Erdesbach hike, you can visit the Erdesbach goat cheese dairy on Eckweg. Confirm your visit before traveling there.
The activities vary in distance, elevation profile, and way of getting around: from the eight-kilometer trail to a donkey hike or a rail-bike route along the former railway line.
