Nackenheim – Wine, Trails and History
Accommodation in Nackenheim
Nackenheim connects the hills of Rheinhessen, the Roter Hang and the Rhine. There are also paths through vineyards and valleys, a circular trail to historic sites, and opportunities to discover wine and local traditions. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to a range of interests: landscapes and outdoor activities, local history, or a focus on wine.
The Rhine, the hillside and special views
The landscape around Nackenheim reveals several sides of Rheinhessen. From the Ehrenkreuz, the view extends south over the vineyards on the Rothenberg as far as Nierstein; to the northeast, you can see the Frankfurt skyline. The natural scenery along the Rhine changes with the water level: when the water is low, basalt becomes visible at Kisselwörth, around a 55-million-year-old volcanic vent. Seeing this rock formation therefore depends specifically on how low the Rhine is.
The Schiffermast is also part of the town’s riverside history. Since 1952, it has been a landmark by the water and a symbol of Nackenheim’s community of boatmen. Here, landscape and local life come together, and the experience is about more than just vineyards.
Two trails, different experiences
The RheinTerrassenWeg runs from Mainz to Worms through Nackenheim and offers views of the Rhine, the Odenwald and the Frankfurt skyline. The EichelsbachTalweg offers a different route: it starts on WeinbergstraĂźe, passes gardens, meadows and orchards through the Eichelsbach Valley, and rejoins the RheinTerrassenWeg. Comparing the routes reveals a contrast between the wide-open views from the RheinTerrassenWeg and the changing scenery of gardens, meadows and valley along the EichelsbachTalweg. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Discover local history along the way
The local history trail leads to more than 35 historic buildings, squares and sights. Its themes range from medieval monastic courtyards to Baroque buildings and notable personalities, telling the story of Nackenheim as a wine-growing town. Information boards stand at each stop, and QR codes link to further information. The trail offers a way to explore a range of historical themes, one step at a time.
The Bergkapelle is another place with a history of its own. It was probably built around 1750, initially as shelter from the weather for people working in the vineyards, and was converted into a chapel in the first half of the 19th century. In the courtyard of the Nackenheim local history museum, the lapidarium of Nackenheim’s funerary culture displays more than 30 professionally restored gravestones. Together, the trail, chapel and lapidarium offer different ways to explore the local past.
Wine tastings and local dining
The Alte Mistkaut on the RheinTerrassenWeg is a renovated former facility used to store essential supplies for the state winery. Outdoor wine tastings are held there during the local wine festival. Nackenheim also has wine taverns and seasonal wine taverns that welcome guests. Since individual businesses’ opening arrangements can change, it is worth checking their current information.
Nackenheim’s winemakers also offer wine tastings for groups. Some organize tractor-drawn wagon rides through the vineyards, where wine, views, explanations of winemaking, and Weck and Worscht (bread rolls and sausage) are all part of the experience. If you are planning a group tasting or a ride, ask the winemakers about their specific offers and available capacity. This lets you plan the wine-focused side of your stay in more detail, without confusing it with visits to historic sites or walks through the landscape.
Nackenheim as a base
Nackenheim has a railway station with connections to the S6 commuter rail line and regular train services to Mainz and Mannheim. If you are considering Nackenheim as a base for your stay, you can take local history, wine experiences and trails into account; check the current timetable for train journeys. Which of these aspects matters most to you may also influence your choice of accommodation and the pace you want for your days.
