At the Einrich Museum, you can explore the history of Katzenelnbogen in a farmstead dating from the 18th century. Historic walking tours also take in the town’s streets, churches, and buildings. Local history takes centre stage, while the wider destination of Rhein-Lahn offers further regional themes for your trip.

A museum offering a window onto local history

The Einrich Museum is a regional history museum. Its exhibits focus on local history, the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, crafts, mining, and agriculture. Rural work and domestic culture are also among its themes. Together, they offer different perspectives on life in the region, from its history to the everyday life and activities that shaped it. A printing shop and the village forge may be included in special demonstrations.

Plan your visit and walking tours

Guided tours of the Einrich Museum are available throughout the year by prior arrangement. There are also regular opening hours that do not require advance booking: from March to November, on the second Sunday of each month from 2 pm to 5 pm. Check the dates before your visit.

The local history association has developed three historic walking tours in Katzenelnbogen. They start at the Einrich Museum car park on Weiherwiese. One of the routes described passes through Untertal, Obertal, and Römerberg, and takes in St Catherine’s Church, the Upper Gate, the old market square, the path up to the castle, and a house dating from 1604. The stops give the tour a tangible historical focus, spanning different aspects of the town from a church building and market square to a single house with a documented date. Check whether the walking tours are available before planning your visit.

Rhein-Lahn: regional themes alongside local history

The wider destination of Rhein-Lahn offers a variety of walking experiences around Aar and Einrich. These include guided hikes, themed and educational trails, pilgrimage routes, and circular and point-to-point walks. There are also mushroom and wild herb walks, as well as routes along the water. The options vary in their themes and route styles, among other things; individual routes and programmes may change.

Rhein-Lahn district covers the area on the right bank of the Rhine near the mouth of the Lahn, the Lahn Valley as far as just before Limburg near Diez, the southern foothills of the Westerwald facing the Lahn Valley, and the northern uplands of the Taunus between the Rhine and Aar. The Roman Limes runs through the district, and its visible remains form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is also part of this wider cultural landscape: the World Heritage Site encompasses a 65-kilometre stretch between Bingen, Rüdesheim, and Koblenz, with historic small towns, terraced vineyards, and castle ruins. The section on the right bank of the Rhine, from Kaub to Lahnstein, lies within Rhein-Lahn district.

Other regional cultural highlights include the historic spa ensemble in Bad Ems, with its spa house, concert hall, villas, former hotels, churches, spa park, and panoramic paths. Marksburg is the only medieval hilltop castle on the Middle Rhine that has never been destroyed. These examples illustrate the breadth of the wider destination without taking the focus away from the local history of Katzenelnbogen.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for accommodation, you can first decide what you want your trip to focus on: the history of Katzenelnbogen, with its museum and walking tour, or regional walking and heritage attractions in the wider destination of Rhein-Lahn as well. This gives you a clear starting point for your search, rather than simply comparing accommodation options side by side.
