There are several ways to discover Ehrang: take a roughly 40-minute walk along the historic city walls, visit its churches and chapels, or enjoy a longer hike through Schlosspark Quint and the heath. You’ll also find cycling routes, views across several valleys and a market with a long history. If you’re looking for accommodation, consider what kind of pace you prefer for your days: would you rather explore historic landmarks, spend time outdoors or combine both?

City Walls and Walking Routes

The Historic Ehrang City Wall Walk is 1,700 metres long and takes about 40 minutes. It follows the historic wall through the town centre, with numerous historic landmarks along the way. The ring wall itself is 1,040 metres long and four to five metres high. The walk and the wall are therefore different in size: if you’re interested in the structure, you can compare its length and height with the route through the town.

The eight-kilometre hike through Schlosspark Quint and the heath takes longer, at about one hour and 40 minutes. It starts at the car park by the Kyll Bridge. Check local access conditions before setting out. Two benches above the barrier offer good views of the Moselle Valley and the Meulenwald. At the cross on the Heidestuben, the view extends across the Trier Valley and the Ruwer Valley. The two hikes differ both in the time they take and in the landscapes you’ll see along the way.

Churches, Chapels and Traces of History

The Catholic Parish Church of St Peter is a Neo-Gothic hall church, built from 1872 to 1875. A hall church has aisles that are approximately the same height; St Peter also features stained-glass windows from different periods. Individual dates offer a point of reference for other buildings: the Linken Chapel at the woodland cemetery was built in 1905 on the foundations of a predecessor first mentioned in 1805. The Heide Chapel was built in 1375 and renovated in 1632.

Smaller monuments have their own stories, too. The three-part Milo Cross was first mentioned in 1336. Haus Briel is considered the oldest house in Ehrang and bears the date “Anno 1593”. The Küfer Chapel is a Baroque chapel dating from the 18th century; a flood mark from 1784 can be seen on its door frame. The Old Ehrang Railway Station is a designated historic monument dating from around 1881.

Archaeological finds suggest that a Roman-Christian settlement existed in the area of today’s Ehrang-Quint district. The history of the area thus reaches further back than the individual buildings whose dates can now be identified precisely.

Schlosspark, Cycling Routes and the Ehrang Market

Schlosspark Quint is known for its exotic tree species. Schloss Quint once served as the residence of the owners of the Quinter ironworks. The park and the castle therefore represent two different aspects of local history: the park’s distinctive planting and the castle’s former role as a residence.

There are several cycling routes to explore, too: the Moselle Cycle Route passes through Ehrang. Connections link it to the Kyll Valley Cycle Route and the Mäushecker Cycle Route, as well as to the Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Route via the Moselle Bridge. Whether on foot or by bike, you’ll find different options to suit your preferred distance and available time.

The Ehrang Market was originally a livestock market and was first mentioned by name in 1350. Today, it takes place regularly as a four-day event featuring music, a church service, local clubs and fairground festivities. Dates and programmes may change, so check the information for your travel dates before your trip.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Ehrang can be reached via the B 53 and A 602; bus services run to Trier and Schweich. When choosing accommodation, you can take these travel connections into account along with your plans for the area: the city wall walk takes about 40 minutes, while the hike through Schlosspark Quint and the heath takes about one hour and 40 minutes. Whether historic landmarks, cycling routes or spending more time in the countryside are your priority, you can plan your stay accordingly without trying to fit every experience into a single day.
