Kirsbach presents its village history through the compact layout of a clustered village and the protected Sankt Josef Chapel. Its hiking options also vary considerably: from a circular route of around 4.5 kilometres at the Boos maars to the 14.6-kilometre Stumpfarmweg. For your planning, it is worth considering both—the architectural history in the village and the different characteristics of the trails and landscapes.

Village Layout and Architectural History

Kirsbach has the compact village layout of a clustered settlement. Later development took place on the northern edge of the village, and a small settlement was added on the western edge from the 1970s onward. The term “clustered village” describes how the buildings are grouped and offers a way to classify the village’s layout.

The protected Sankt Josef Chapel was built in 1922 as a Baroque-style hall church made of quarry stone. Its windows were designed by stained-glass artist Otto Linnemann. The building and its window decoration each make a distinct contribution: one highlights the material and architecture, the other the work of a named artist.

Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

The Stumpfarmweg is considered a moderately difficult hike. It is 14.6 kilometres long, with 264 metres of ascent and descent. The route heads towards the Boos Maar and follows the Nitz as far as Brücktal. It crosses the districts of Boos, Kirsbach, Brücktal, and Arbach—providing precise orientation without limiting the route to a single village.

Signage is incomplete in some sections. Therefore, download the GPX track and a map before setting out, and check the route before you start; routes can change. This way, you can keep both the elevation profile and on-the-trail navigation in mind while planning.

Nearby Drees has a forest learning and adventure trail with 15 stations for puzzles and movement and balance activities. Three other walking trails around Drees are called Waldweg, Talweg, and Höhenweg. This gives you a choice of different themes: stations for puzzling and trying things out, or trails whose names help with orientation. Before your visit, check the trail’s condition and whether the routes are accessible locally.

Maars and Sights in Drees and Boos

The nearby Boos Double Maar consists of two broad, shallow basins: one is a dry maar, while the other is now a pond. The nature reserve is known for its flora and fauna. The crater trail is a circular route of around 4.5 kilometres that passes the Boos Eifel Tower and both Boos maars. Information boards along the route explain the area’s volcanism and its animal and plant life.

Compared with the Stumpfarmweg, the crater trail is considerably shorter and takes you on a circular route to the two maars; the Stumpfarmweg is the longer hike and heads towards the Boos Maar and along the Nitz. The crater trail starts at the car park for the Boos Double Maar Volcano Park station on the L94. There is also parking for the route at the youth centre in the centre of Boos. As local parking conditions can change, it is best to check before you drive.

The Eifel on a Larger Scale

In the wider Eifel region, the Hohe Acht rises to 747 metres. Climb the Kaiser Wilhelm Tower for views across the Eifel; in good weather, Cologne Cathedral may also be visible. Weather and visibility determine whether you get this view. As the tower may be temporarily inaccessible for maintenance or due to closure, check access before visiting.

The Volcanic Eifel offers its own regional perspective on volcanism: 350 eruption centres have been counted there, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. In the NĂĽrburgring adventure region, cycling, hiking, Nordic walking, and motorsports are all part of the range of activities. The mountain biking arena around the NĂĽrburgring is part of the Radarena am Ring and includes three well-signposted circular routes. Before setting out, check the route and available downloads.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests

When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to explore Kirsbach’s village layout and chapel, or are you especially interested in hiking trails, maars, and regional volcanic landscapes? The trail lengths, circular routes, and landscape themes provide practical points of comparison. Choose accommodation to suit the places and experiences you want to make the focus of your trip.
