Kunrau combines castle history with the Drömling, a large area of wetlands and lowland moorland. The castle, historic park and paths into the surrounding countryside offer different ways to enjoy a stay: culture, time outdoors or exploring nature. When looking for accommodation, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on. Kunrau is directly connected with the Drömling; the administrative office of the Drömling Nature and Cultural Landscape in Saxony-Anhalt is also located in the town. The contrast between the castle as a cultural venue and the vast moorland gives Kunrau a distinctive character as a travel destination.

Kunrau Castle and its history

Kunrau Castle was built between 1859 and 1861 for Theodor Hermann Rimpau. The historic castle park, with its splendid landscaping, invites visitors to linger. A guided tour of the castle includes climbing the tower and visiting the exhibition in the attic. The park and the tour offer different experiences: the park is all about spending time outdoors, while the tour combines the tower climb with the exhibition.

The moorland landscape is also historically connected with Rimpau: in 1862, Theodor Rimpau, owner of the Kunrau estate, began building dams in the moor. The castle and the moor dams are two distinct historical themes linked to Kunrau through Rimpau.

The Drömling and its routes

The Drömling’s landscape includes meadows, hedgerows and forests, as well as marshes and water areas, alongside an extensive network of waterways. The administrative office of the Drömling Nature and Cultural Landscape in Saxony-Anhalt is located in Kunrau. A nature trail starts in Kunrau and leads into the northern Drömling, providing a route through the area. This connects the vast landscape with a specific path that begins in Kunrau and leads into the northern Drömling.

The Klötze Moor and Forest Tour in the Drömling is about 60 km long and continues to Kunrau Castle, which is also referred to as a manor house or country estate. The Altmark Circuit from Klötze to the Hanseatic town of Salzwedel passes Kunrau Castle. The routes therefore offer different points of interest: the northern Drömling on the nature trail, the approximate length and continuation to Kunrau on the Klötze tour, or the castle along the route between Klötze and Salzwedel on the Altmark Circuit. This lets you choose between a path into the countryside, a tour with a stated length, and a circuit that passes the castle.

Creative activities and food and drink

The Kreativhof Kunrau mainly offers creative courses focused on nature. Tastings of the farm’s beer and outdoor cooking in the “wild kitchen” are also available. These creative and culinary activities complement the castle and landscape attractions with hands-on experiences. Before your visit, check with the Kreativhof for dates for courses, tastings and outdoor cooking. Kunrau outdoor swimming pool has been closed since 2021. The Nature Experience Centre and the Kunrau eco-school ceased operations on 31 July 2024.
