Lake Kretzschau tells the story of a changing landscape: it was created by groundwater inflow into the former Groitzschen II open-cast mine. Today, the lake covers 25 hectares and reaches a depth of approximately 45 metres at its deepest point. It is fed by a stream and a groundwater spring. The former mine and the present-day lake give it a distinct place in the history of the landscape.

The Lake and Things to Do by the Water

Swimming and ball games are possible at Lake Kretzschau. Check conditions for these seasonal leisure activities before your trip. Boat and bicycle rentals make it possible to enjoy activities on the water and around the lake. Find out in advance whether rentals are available on your dates. You can then plan your day around swimming and games, a boat trip or a bike ride.

For a break, the lakeside terrace serves refreshments and traditional home-style food. As food and drink services may change, it is best to ask locally about the current options.

Cycling and the Wine-Growing Landscape

The Zuckerbahn Cycle Path connects Kretzschau to the regional cycling network. There is also a connection to the long-distance Elster Cycle Route via Zeitz. The two routes differ in scope: the Zuckerbahn Cycle Path provides a link to the regional network, while the Elster Cycle Route is accessible via Zeitz. Check the conditions and signage for your chosen route before setting off.

Explore the wine-growing landscape of the White Elster on foot or by bicycle in the municipality. Wine tastings and purchases are available at the Salsitz wine shop. Alongside the leisure activities at the lake, this offers another focus for planning your day: paths through the wine-growing landscape and an introduction to regional wine.

In Grana, within Kretzschau, the vineyards belonging to the Hubertus Triebe winery are listed in the German vineyard register under the name Salsitzer Englischer Garten. The vineyard name gives this part of the municipality a specific connection to the region’s wine culture.

Culture and Accommodation

Hollsteitz Church also offers a cultural point of interest: its pulpit altar features life-size figures. For travellers interested in church art as well as the lake and wine, this detail is a distinctive part of a visit.

There are several options for an overnight stay by the lake. A small campsite accepts long-term and short-stay campers by prior reservation; check the current booking conditions in advance. Next to Lake Kretzschau is a youth hostel with 13 bungalows, suitable for larger groups. For both options, it is advisable to check current availability.

Plan Your Journey

Kretzschau is connected to the surrounding area via the B 180. The nearest rail connection is in Zeitz. Check current timetables, road conditions and possible diversions for your journey. If you are travelling by bicycle, also check the conditions and signage for your planned route.
