Allstedt is a place for discoveries that reach far back into history: Allstedt Castle combines a long political past with distinctive architectural features; Wigberti Church and the town mill each reveal their own historical development. There are also trails through woods and valleys, as well as a seasonal outdoor pool.

Allstedt Castle: History and Architectural Features

The first documented mention of “Alstediburg” dates to the late 9th century. For more than 250 years, Allstedt Castle was one of the most important political centres of the Holy Roman Empire. Its fabric also makes a striking impression: the defensive walls of the inner castle are up to 3.50 metres thick. The castle kitchen is one of the largest in Europe. Traces of Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque and Historicist styles have been preserved at Allstedt Palace. Its architecture thus spans several periods rather than being limited to a single style.

A museum in the palace complex presents the history of the imperial palace, castle and palace across several exhibition areas. The subjects are presented in a child-friendly way; there is also an immersive multimedia presentation about the history of Thomas Müntzer. For those interested in culture, this offers different ways to explore the site and learn about its history. Check the museum’s current access arrangements before travelling.

Wigberti Church: Early Origins and a Romanesque Tower

Wigberti Church reaches further back in time. Originally built as a wooden church in the 8th century, it is one of the oldest structures in the Golden Meadow. Today it survives partly as a ruin; its well-preserved Romanesque tower dates from the 12th century. The building thus brings together the early origins of a church and a well-preserved medieval feature. In contrast to the palace, whose surviving traces span several periods, the focus here is on the development of a single church.

Allstedt Town Mill: Changing Uses

Allstedt Town Mill also tells a story through its changing uses: it has existed since the early 17th century, served as a mint between 1621 and 1623, and later became a grain mill. Allstedter Mühlenbräu began brewing on site in autumn 2022; check before travelling whether production is currently taking place. Visits and guided tours are possible only by prior telephone arrangement; check this requirement again before your visit. The mill machinery can be powered by water when there is enough water in the mill race. Its operation therefore depends on the water level.

Woodland Trails, Valleys and the Outdoor Pool

The outdoor pool is located below the castle, beside the Vorwerk pond. As a seasonal facility, it offers a place for leisure and relaxation; check opening information before your visit. Hiking trails can be found in the surrounding woods and in the Rohne and Borntal valleys. Allstedt is connected by primary roads to Sangerhausen, Querfurt and Artern. Check road conditions before setting off.
