Krosigk combines a distinctive local history with mills and a landscape shaped by porphyry, agriculture and species-rich semi-dry grasslands. There are several ways to plan your trip: explore the history of the village, include the watermill in your itinerary, or get to know Krosigk on a cycling tour.

Castle, Church and Traces of Local History

Krosigk Castle was first mentioned in a document in 927 as “castrum croszok” and was originally a moated castle. Its keep was probably built as a defensive tower as early as the 9th century. The tower’s presumed construction date and its later documented mention are two different points in time. This distinction makes the castle an interesting starting point for exploring the village’s history.

Construction of the village church began in 1152 on a rise above the village. In 1729, the dovecote tower was also erected on the parish grounds as a “monument of gratitude” by “faithful souls.” The church and tower each add a distinct historical dimension: for the church, its construction and elevated location stand out; for the dovecote tower, its dedication as a memorial. Together with the early mention of the castle, they offer several ways to explore Krosigk’s architectural history and culture of remembrance.

Two Mills, Different Stories

Krosigk Watermill is used as an excursion restaurant and museum. Its new waterwheel was ceremonially commissioned on 9 June 2025. If you plan to visit while it is operating, check locally. The old milling mechanism can be viewed every second weekend; check the date before you travel.

The post mill has a different story: it was moved from Gollma to Krosigk in 1995. A storm destroyed it in 2007, and it was rebuilt by 2010. At the watermill, the focus is on the waterwheel, its use as a museum and excursion restaurant, and the opportunity to see the old milling mechanism. The post mill’s story is shaped by its relocation, destruction and reconstruction. Anyone interested in milling technology will find two distinct historical narratives here.

Landscape, Green Space and Nature

Windmill Hill near Krosigk is a prominent porphyry outcrop in a landscape used intensively for agriculture. The east-facing semi-dry grasslands around Krosigk and Kaltenmark offer a different natural highlight. They provide habitats for grasshoppers, ground beetles, wild bees and butterflies. The geological formation and habitats for different animal groups offer distinct perspectives on the landscape.

The mill pond has a spacious, well-maintained green area with a barbecue area, playgrounds, a Kneipp facility, orchard meadows and art. If any particular facility is important to your plans, it is worth checking its current status shortly before your visit. The Horchen recreation area includes a fitness trail by the large oak tree on the way to the watermill. Information boards at the mill pond show walkers, hikers and cyclists ways to explore the region.

The places and activities described offer different options for planning your day: history and mills, exercise or nature. If you are travelling with children, the playgrounds at the mill pond may be worth including in your plans; the green area also includes a Kneipp facility, orchard meadows and art. This means Krosigk can be explored not only through its historic buildings, but also through its landscape and recreational activities.

Cycling Routes for Different Timeframes

Three cycling routes differ in length and in the role Krosigk plays along the way. The approximately 20-kilometre half-day tour “Around Petersberg” has Krosigk Castle and fortified church as its main destination. The approximately 60-kilometre Wettin Western Route includes a detour to the castle and fortified church. The 92.98-kilometre circular route “Saalekreis Northwest in One Day” also passes through Krosigk as a stop.

Comparing the routes helps you choose: Krosigk is the main destination on the half-day tour, part of a detour on the Wettin Western Route, and one stop on the longer circular route.
