Discover Goldbeck: Cycling Routes and Fieldstone Churches
Accommodation in Goldbeck
Goldbeck brings together cycling routes, historic churches and shared community spaces. The Elbe-Uchte Trail runs through the village, while the fieldstone churches in Bertkow and Plätz date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. This brings outdoor activity and local history together as distinct highlights.
Cycling routes and connections
Goldbeck is connected by paved cycling routes and the Stendal–Wittenberge railway line. The Elbe-Uchte Trail runs through the village, offering an alternative connection between Uchtspringe and Arneburg on the Altmark Circular Route. This provides a cycling trip with a direct connection to Goldbeck; the railway connection offers another starting point for planning.
Play, barbecues and horse riding in the municipality
In Möllendorf, within the municipality of Goldbeck, there is a public event, play and barbecue area with facilities for tying up horses. It is next to a cycling and riding trail. For families, the play area is a specific reason to visit; those travelling with a horse can make use of the tie-up facilities. Goldbeck also has an information board about the Sternreiten in der Altmark project.
Bertkow and Plätz are also part of the municipality of Goldbeck and offer a different focus: both villages have typical 12th- and 13th-century fieldstone churches, surrounded by walls made of fieldstone and brick. The combination of churches and enclosing walls makes the different materials part of the architectural impression. Bertkow and Plätz can be reached on horseback via the Sternreiten in der Altmark route, and by bicycle via Route B of the Arneburg-Goldbeck Municipal Association. This makes it possible to visit both villages as part of a riding route or a designated cycling route.
More places to explore in the wider Stendal destination
In the wider Stendal destination, the wildlife park offers a special focus on animal watching: visitors can see more than 500 animals from 75 species at close range. Children can feed and pet goats in the petting enclosure, then enjoy the adventure playground. This is a different kind of outing from Goldbeck’s routes and churches: here, animal encounters and a place to play afterwards take centre stage.
Tangermünde and Schönhausen also offer distinctive historical attractions in the wider Stendal destination. From 1373 to 1378, Tangermünde Castle served as a secondary residence of Emperor Charles IV, alongside Prague Castle. Tangermünde is a popular tourist destination with a fascinating town skyline and a very well-preserved medieval town centre. The Tangermünde Gate is considered the oldest town gate in northeastern Germany.
In Schönhausen, the church where Otto von Bismarck was baptised has an eight-metre-high altar retable. It bears the “Open Church” and “Cyclists’ Church” signs and offers a church tour that follows a total of eleven QR codes. Opening arrangements may change; check them before your visit. The Bismarck Museum in Schönhausen displays gifts received by Otto von Bismarck, personal belongings and historical images. It also offers public tours, group tours and events focused on historical and political education.
In Stendal itself, St Mary’s Church is home to its gilded high altar from 1471, one of the most significant woodcarvings of its time in northern Germany. The Uenglinger Gate is a surviving part of the former town fortifications and offers panoramic views of the town and its surroundings. The wider Stendal destination thus includes both historic buildings and wildlife watching, while Goldbeck has its own distinct character, with its cycling connections, villages and fieldstone churches.
