Kropstädt offers views of woodland, paths and local history. In the Kropstädt Heath, different types of beech forest meet a network of paths; in the village, the castle and parish church represent different architectural themes. The annual park festival in the castle park is another highlight. This gives you a choice when planning your trip: an active route, an interest in nature, or a cultural or seasonal event.

Heathland paths with different route options

The Kropstädt Heathland Trail is an easy, 12 km circular route. It begins at Kropstädt Castle, heads south through Wüstemark and along the Zahnabach stream to Jahmo, then returns to Kropstädt. Its length, difficulty rating and return to the starting point give you clear reference points when planning a hike.

The trail connects to the Friedenthaler Grund circular route. If you include this connection in your route planning, check the trail conditions before setting out; they may change.

There are also various paths through the Kropstädt Heath leading to Kropstädt. One route runs from Kropstädt through Wüstemark and Woltersdorf and back to Zahna. In contrast to the heathland loop, this route ends in Zahna. If you are planning together, you can first decide whether you prefer a loop returning to Kropstädt or a route with a different destination.

Heathland, castle park and local history

The Kropstädt Heath comprises a complex of wood anemone beech forest and woodruff beech forest. These names distinguish two specific types of beech forest and provide a precise point of interest for nature lovers, alongside the routes through the area. Kropstädt is therefore interesting not only for its individual buildings: the character of its woodland is also part of the picture.

The castle in Kropstädt was built in 1855 in the English Gothic style. The large park surrounding the castle contains rare trees, including ginkgo, tulip and trumpet trees. The parish church adds a different architectural history: its core is Late Romanesque, and it was altered several times later. A comparison therefore sets the castle’s date and style alongside the church’s Late Romanesque core and later alterations. The term “Late Romanesque” refers to a period in art history and helps place the historic core of the parish church in its historical context.

Park festival and getting there

The Kropstädt Park Festival takes place every year on the second weekend in July in the castle park. If you are planning your trip around the festival, schedule your visit for this period and check the exact event dates before travelling.

Kropstädt and Wüstemark can be reached from Wittenberg and Bad Belzig on the X2; the nearest railway station is in Zahna. Check the X2 timetable for your travel dates. This will help you plan your journey around the heathland paths, local history or the park festival.
