Get to know Zahna-Elster through tangible traces of agriculture, local history and the Elbe. At the Zahna Agricultural Museum, historical domestic life meets the evolution of harvesting technology; in Elster, shipping, carnival and life by the river are the themes of a local history museum. There are also churches with different historical connections, a sculpture park in open meadowland and cycling routes with distinct characteristics.

Zahna Agricultural Museum: Daily life and agriculture

The Zahna Agricultural Museum includes a four-sided farmstead, with a residential building dating from 1730 and an original 1920s apartment. Alongside the architecture, it offers a tangible glimpse into how people lived at the time. The collection includes tractors, harvesting machinery, a preserved blacksmith’s forge and agricultural tools from past centuries. The grain technology exhibition traces a distinct line of development, from sickles and threshing flails to the combine harvester. Anyone interested in agriculture will find both individual historic tools and the evolution of technology on display here.

Museums and churches in Elster and Zahna

The Elster Local History, Carnival and Shipping Museum is divided into three thematic sections. Its exhibits cover shipping, the Elbe ferry, carnival, domestic life and the Elbe community; a local chronicle adds further insight. River history and local traditions are thus presented alongside life at home. The Evangelical Church of Elster also offers a specific historical reference point: its foundation stone was laid in 1867, and it was consecrated in 1871. Concerts are also held at the Evangelical Church of Zahna; dates may vary.

The Church of St. Mary in Zahna is a Romanesque cruciform church. Churches preserved in this form are considered extremely rare. The first fieldstone church in Leetza was built around 1200. These dates mark different milestones: in Elster, the foundation stone was laid and the church was consecrated; in Leetza, the date refers to the origins of the first fieldstone church. The churches thus offer different historical perspectives, without confusing architectural style with date of origin.

Art and landscape in BĂĽlzig

BĂĽlzig Sculpture Park is a meadow of around 20 hectares, with the BĂĽlzig stream and small patches of woodland. Since 1993, sculptures featuring angel motifs have been created there from wood, metal and other materials. The artworks are integrated into the landscape and invite visitors to look at them, touch them and reflect on them. The meadow, stream and trees provide the landscape setting for the sculptures. BĂĽlzig thus offers a different experience from the collections in the museums: here, artworks are set within an open landscape.

Experience the Elbe and discover different cycling routes

In Elster, a locality within Zahna-Elster, the Elbe Cycle Route runs right alongside the river. The Elster ferry connects the sections of the route on the left and right banks of the Elbe between Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Torgau. Check the current ferry service before setting off. A walk along the landscaped Elbe promenade in Elster is another way to experience the river.

The Berlin–Leipzig Cycle Route offers a different perspective: it passes through Zahna and crosses the Fläming region; the full route is about 250 kilometres long. It follows designated cycling and hiking trails, low-traffic roads, and paths through fields and forests. The two cycling route descriptions therefore differ in specific ways: in Elster, the focus is on the route running directly alongside the river, while the Berlin–Leipzig Cycle Route links different types of paths and passes through the Fläming. First decide which route you want to take, then check current route conditions and ferry service before your trip.
