Kirschau: Art, Church Architecture and Körse Castle
Accommodation in Kirschau
Kirschau offers different ways to experience culture and landscape: St. John’s Church is an octagonal, circular building in the late Art Nouveau style, FLOX Gallery is located on the former “Friese” industrial site, and Körse Castle stands on a granite outcrop surrounded by the River Spree. This gives you a clear choice of focus when planning your trip—architecture and the townscape, contemporary art, or the distinctive setting of the castle ruins. When looking for accommodation, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
Church Architecture and Local Sights
St. John’s Church was built in 1924 to a design by Dresden architect Bohlig as an octagonal, circular building in the late Art Nouveau style. It has been a cycling church since 2019; check the current access arrangements before your visit. Körse Hall is a listed building. Other sights in Kirschau include the manufacturers’ villas, the town center, the Protestant church with its circular dome, the Three-Country Stone and the Töppelbank. St. John’s Church is an octagonal, circular building in the late Art Nouveau style; the Protestant church has a circular dome as a distinctive architectural feature.
Körse Thermal Baths, along with its playground, are also among the local sights. On August 31, 2026, the thermal baths were closed while renovation and improvements were underway. Before your trip, check whether they are still closed.
Art at Friese
FLOX Gallery began operating in Kirschau on June 29, 2013, on the former “Friese” industrial site. It is located in reconstructed rooms of the former sample office, exhibits contemporary art and has around 500 square meters of exhibition space. This makes it one of the largest privately run galleries of its kind in Saxony in terms of space. The combination of the exhibition venue and the site’s former use gives a visit to the gallery a tangible historical connection.
TanzART Kirschau at Friese is also among the local sights; FLOX Gallery and TanzART Kirschau therefore share a connection to Friese. As programs and opening hours may change, check the latest information before visiting.
Körse Castle and the Landscape
Körse Castle lies southeast of Kirschau on Schlossberg, a granite outcrop surrounded by the River Spree. The location, rock formation and river together create a distinctive connection to the landscape, setting it apart from the architectural features of the townscape. The Körse Castle ruins also include a castle museum and a model of the ruins.
Planning Your Stay
