Belgershain brings together castle history, ecclesiastical architecture and a cycling route that passes through the town. The castle grounds define the town centre, alongside St John’s Church, the local heritage room and the Leipzig Green Ring. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests: historic sites in the centre or the cycling route, which connects Belgershain to a longer circuit.

Castle, Church and Local History

Belgershain’s town centre is shaped by the castle grounds, with their moat and park. The complex developed from a moated castle built in the 11th or 12th century, surrounded by a water-filled moat. The extensively renovated castle hall is used for a wide range of cultural events. A heritage record dated 27 December 2025 attributes local historical and architectural significance to Belgershain Castle and manor. Here, the site’s early history meets its present-day cultural use.

St John’s Church also offers a specific point of reference in time: it was consecrated on St John’s Day in 1686. The church houses the Schmeisser organ from 1905, which was reconstructed in 2008, including its case. The consecration year and the organ’s history offer different points of interest for exploring Belgershain’s ecclesiastical history and architecture.

The Belgershain local heritage room is on the first floor of the municipal offices next to the castle. Its local history exhibitions and documents cover archaeological finds, farming, crafts, the railway station, church, school and sport. The subjects range from earlier ways of life and work to institutions that have shaped the town. During the seasonal opening period, from May to October, it is scheduled to open on the first Tuesday of each month from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Visits outside these hours are possible by prior arrangement. Check the opening arrangements before your visit.

The Belgershain local history association continues to maintain a town chronicle and collects and presents documents and objects relating to local history. Together with the subjects covered in the local heritage room, this offers a broad view of the area’s past—from archaeological finds and crafts to the school, railway station and sport.

Cycling Route and Landscape

Belgershain is part of the Leipzig Green Ring, whose cycling route passes through the town. The Green Ring is a circular route that can be started at any point. It is fully signposted and marked with distance indicators. These provide guidance when planning, while the choice of starting point leaves room to plan your own route.

In fine weather, the park around Belgershain Castle is a pleasant place for a walk. In the wider regional area, the Rohrbach Ponds are known beyond the boundaries of the municipality as a recreation and nature conservation area. In addition, the FFH site “Rohrbach Ponds and Göselbach,” number 225, includes areas within the municipality of Belgershain. The distinction is important for orientation: these protected areas lie within the municipality, while the Rohrbach Ponds are described as part of the wider regional area.
