Schulendorf combines a direct connection to a cycling route with a rich local history. A dedicated cycle path links Büchen and Schulendorf along the L205; at the same time, the history of the village and its buildings spans several centuries. This offers different ways to shape your stay: get out and about, learn about the village’s history, or combine the two.

Cycling around Schulendorf

The cycle path along the L205 connects Büchen and Schulendorf. In addition, numerous cycling and hiking trails lead from Schulendorf in all directions for day trips. Local route conditions can change, so check the current route before setting out. If you’d like to explore further afield, the wider destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg has an extensive cycling network: it offers 1,000 kilometres of signposted cycle paths, four long-distance cycle routes and 13 themed circular routes.

The BĂĽchen district and its landscapes can also be explored on foot, by bike or by canoe on the Elbe-LĂĽbeck Canal. A long-distance cycle route runs along the canal from LĂĽneburg to LĂĽbeck, passing through the BĂĽchen district. The canal also has a historical connection: parts of its course follow the old route of the Stecknitz-Delvenau Canal, dating from the 14th century. This lets you combine a bike ride with a glimpse into the long history of the waterways.

The history of Schulendorf and Bartelsdorf

Schulendorf and Bartelsdorf were first documented in 1230 under the historical names Sculenthorp and Bertoldestorp. Franzhagen was first mentioned in 1605. The history of Franzhof includes Duke Franz II, who had a manor house and an associated chapel built there. The complex was demolished in 1716; the name Franzhof preserves the memory of Schulendorf’s ducal heritage.

The village’s documented history also includes mills and waterworks. The Neue Mühle was built in 1690 to replace the Mordmühle, which had been destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. The Baarsteich was created as a reservoir, while the Hofgraben was dug as a deep canal in the direction of the castle. Together, these stories span early place names, ducal building projects, mills and waterworks.

Things to do in the wider destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg

The Duchy of Lauenburg offers more options for excursions beyond Schulendorf. Twenty-six percent of the district is forest, and it has 48 lakes. In the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park, visitors can hike, cycle and canoe, or swim in the forest lakes; four cycling routes in the nature park are signposted. Guided excursions with experts focus on the district’s wildlife, plant life and cultural history. For specific dates, check the current programme.

In Mölln, the Uhlenkolk Environmental Centre offers nature-based educational and activity programmes for kindergartens, school classes, families and adults. If you’re planning a visit, check the current opening arrangements. These regional activities complement the local history and routes around Schulendorf, so you don’t have to make every day of your trip the same.

Farm-gate sales and finding accommodation

Bartelsdorf is home to a large potato farm with direct sales. If you’re planning to visit the farm shop, it’s best to check in advance when it’s open. In the Duchy of Lauenburg, rural cafés and farm cafés are known for homemade cakes made with regional produce; as individual businesses may change, it’s worth checking that your chosen destination is currently open.

This lets you shape your stay around your own travel pace, without assuming a particular location or type of accommodation.
