Kücknitz combines landscapes and experiencing nature with Herrenwyk’s industrial history. A protected landscape, a cycling and hiking trail, environmental education, the Herrenwyk Industrial Museum and St. John’s Church give the district its varied character. When planning your trip, this offers a choice between nature and outdoor activities, and culture and local history.

Landscape and Nature

The “Kücknitzer Mühlenbach and Söhlengraben” landscape conservation area extends through the Lübeck districts of Kücknitz, Rangenberg and Siems and comprises four sections. The protected area thus extends beyond Kücknitz to include Rangenberg and Siems.

The nature garden at the Dummersdorfer Ufer nature conservation station invites visitors to linger and provides a habitat for many threatened insects. The garden thus combines a pleasant place to spend time with a specific nature-related theme: the habitat of threatened insects.

Cycling and Hiking Trail in the Mühlenbachtal

The cycling and hiking trail through Kücknitz’s Mühlenbachtal is connected to the district center at Kücknitzer Kirchplatz and links Kücknitz with Rangenberg. This gives travelers a specific point of reference if they would like to include cycling or hiking in their plans.

For a specific outing, it is worth checking the current trail conditions before setting off, as they can change.

Environmental Education

The “Schafberg Dummersdorf” nature experience area is home to a nature kindergarten and the environmental education center. Alongside the landscape and trails, environmental education offers another way to discover Kücknitz.

The Dummersdorfer Ufer landscape conservation association offers environmental education and public outreach, including guided tours and excursions for children and adults. If you are planning a trip with children, these activities, which are explicitly offered for both children and adults, provide a specific point of connection with your travel interests.

Industrial History and Architecture

The Herrenwyk Industrial Museum and History Workshop is located in Lübeck-Kücknitz in the former company store of the blast furnace works, on the edge of the workers’ housing estate built in 1906/1907. The permanent exhibition “Life and Work in Herrenwyk” presents the history of the works. Other topics include the industrialization of Lübeck, the Flender shipyard, and the fate of forced laborers and prisoners of war in Lübeck’s industry. The perspective thus ranges from a single works to broader industrial contexts and the fates of people in industry.

St. John’s Church in Kücknitz offers another historical perspective. Lübeck building councilor Carl Mühlenpfordt designed it in the then-popular Heimatschutz style; it was consecrated on November 27, 1910. The style places the design in its historical period, while the precise date marks a specific moment in the church’s history.

When looking for accommodation, you can use your travel interests as a starting point: would you like cycling and hiking to shape your stay, or are you more interested in industrial and architectural history? This helps you decide whether Kücknitz suits your interests before choosing specific accommodation.
