Kletkamp: Manor House, Architectural History and Landscape
Accommodation in Kletkamp
Kletkamp combines a historic estate complex with the rolling landscape of Holstein Switzerland. The manor house, gatehouse and remains of the former moat tell the story of a former Renaissance moated castle. There are also signposted hiking trails and cycle routes in various directions. When planning your trip, the first question is whether to focus on architectural history or activities in the countryside.
The manor house and traces of the moated castle
The core of the manor house at Kletkamp Estate is a two-storey, half-timbered double building dating from 1547, and is considered the oldest manor house in Schleswig-Holstein. The projecting front section dates from 1703. The dates mark two construction phases in the same building. Kletkamp’s historic estate complex was originally a Renaissance moated castle. The surviving historic complex also includes the gatehouse and part of the former moat. The manor house, gatehouse and section of the moat thus bring together different architectural features of the complex.
Rolling countryside, hiking and cycling routes
Kletkamp Estate is situated in the rolling landscape of Holstein Switzerland. Numerous signposted hiking trails help you find your way on walks. For cycling, there are developed routes towards the Baltic coast, the large lakes, Eutin, Preetz and Heiligenhafen. These destinations offer various starting points for planning your own routes. Nearby LĂĽtjenburg has a bicycle shop with rentals. If you would like to rent a bike, check the rental service before you travel.
Kletkamp offers two distinct interests: the architectural history of the estate and outdoor activities in a hilly landscape. When planning your trip, you can decide which to give more emphasis, or include both as equally important themes.
In the wider destination of Plön: lakes, coast and routes
The wider destination of Plön offers further landscapes to explore. The district of Plön lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has around 50 kilometres of Baltic coastline. It includes around 80 lakes, among them the Great Plön Lake, covering 29 km², and Lake Selent, covering 22 km². There are places to swim along the Baltic coast from Mönkeberg to Sehlendorfer Strand. The coast also offers sailing, surfing, diving, boat trips, offshore sailing tours, cutter trips and surf fishing. Large parts of the district belong to Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, which covers 75,000 hectares and offers opportunities to experience nature and see rare animals.
The district of Plön also offers a range of options for active days: you can explore the Schwentine water trail by canoe; sailboats and excursion boats also travel on the lakes. The signposted cycling network covers 850 kilometres, and developed Nordic walking routes add to the options on land. A two-day cycling tour, “Baltic Coast – Holstein Switzerland”, starts in Kiel and runs via Plön and Lütjenburg to the Baltic coast; it is particularly suitable for pedelecs.
Culture as another focus in the destination of Plön
Plön Castle stands above the lake of the same name and is the landmark of the district of Plön. Lütjenburg is known for its historic town centre. In addition to the estate complex in Kletkamp, there are therefore other cultural themes to consider when planning your trip. If you are interested in group tours, combined tours can be booked in the Plön Castle grounds, covering Prinzenhaus, the castle park and the castle grounds. Booking arrangements may change.
Make your choice based on the places you actually want to visit.
