Kühren: Pond Landscape, Birdlife and Watermill
Accommodation in Kühren
Kühren brings together a pond landscape, birdlife and architectural history in a distinctive nature and culture theme. At Kührener Teich, a large fishpond and its importance to various bird species take centre stage; the historic watermill complements the area as a protected monument. If you are looking for accommodation in Kühren, these different highlights can help you shape your stay around nature watching or cultural history.
Nature Reserve and Birdlife at Kührener Teich
The “Kührener Teich and Surroundings” nature reserve covers 79 hectares and was designated in 1994. At its centre is a 40-hectare fishpond with an average depth of half a metre. The area figures refer to different sizes: 79 hectares cover the protected area, while 40 hectares cover the pond itself.
Red-necked grebes find conditions for breeding at Kührener Teich; their breeding population is also one of the largest in Schleswig-Holstein. In summer, the water is an important gathering place for greylag geese. The area is also an important feeding ground for white-tailed eagles. The birdlife here therefore varies both by species and by season.
An 18-hectare area between Lanker See and Kührener Teich is grazed extensively by Galloway cattle. A small observation hut is also available at Kührener Teich for birdwatching.
On Foot, by Bike or from a Boat
The natural surroundings of the nature reserves can be explored on foot, by bicycle or from a boat; local nature conservation rules apply. A 16-kilometre path around Lanker See passes both protected areas. It is signposted as part of the Schusteracht cycle route. As signage and access conditions may change, it is advisable to check briefly before setting out.
NABU offers nature tours in the Lanker See and Kührener Teich area. Check in advance for current offerings and suitable dates.
The Historic Watermill
The historic Kühren watermill has been preserved and designated as a protected cultural monument. It is also one of the cultural and historical attractions highlighted by Schusteracht. For visitors interested in historic buildings as well as nature, the mill offers a distinct cultural attraction in Kühren.
In the Wider Plön Destination
In the wider Plön destination, the view opens onto a larger landscape: Plön District lies between the Baltic Sea and Holstein Switzerland and has around 50 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline. The district includes around 80 lakes. Großer Plöner See covers 29 square kilometres, and Selenter See covers 22 square kilometres. These regional figures offer a different frame of reference from Kührener Teich, described here in more specific terms.
Along the Baltic Sea coast of Plön District, there are opportunities for swimming, sailing, surfing, diving and boat trips. Large parts of the district belong to Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. It covers 75,000 hectares and offers space for nature experiences and rare wildlife.
Cycling and walking routes also extend beyond individual trails: Plön District has an 850-kilometre signposted cycling network as well as developed Nordic walking routes. The specific route layout may change.
