Klein Bennebek brings together several themes for a trip: landscape and water, birdlife, cycling and activities on the Alte Sorge. Some of these are within the municipality, while others are in the nearby area. When planning, you can therefore decide whether you want to observe nature, follow signposted cycling routes or make the river the focus of your visit.

Between the Lowlands and the Vorgeest

The municipality lies on the edge of the Eider-Treene lowlands and the Schleswiger Vorgeest. Small streams run through the municipal area and carry surface water towards the Sorge; oak trees shape the landscape. Watercourses and tree cover give the place a distinct landscape character, while nearby moors and wetlands offer further opportunities to explore nature.

Water, Moor and Birdlife

421 hectares of the “Gräben der nördlichen Alten Sorge” protected area lie within the municipality of Klein Bennebek. Nearby, upstream from Fünfmühlen on the Alte Sorge, floating-leaved plants such as water lilies and water-soldier grow. Reppelmoor is also close by: the former raised-bog complex is now described as a transitional bog with varying stages of degradation. Aquatic plants, moorland and the protected river landscape offer nature enthusiasts several distinct facets to discover.

The protected area is an important resting and feeding ground for Bewick’s swans and white storks. Along the Alte Sorge, otters have become established again after having been absent since the late 1980s; if you are hoping to see one, it is best to ask locally about recent sightings. “Gräben der nördlichen Alten Sorge” is also a distribution hotspot for the green hawker dragonfly in the Eider-Treene-Sorge area. These species illustrate the diversity of wildlife in this landscape.

Paths and Cycling Routes

The protected area has an extensive network of partly surfaced paths. Local conditions can change, so check them before setting out. For cyclists, the signposted Eider-Treene-Sorge cycle route runs along the northern edge of the protected area. Another signposted regional cycle route runs from Bergenhusen via FĂĽnfmĂĽhlen and Reppel to Alt Bennebek and Klein Bennebek. The routes can be distinguished by their different courses: one follows the edge of the protected area, while the other connects the places mentioned.

There is also an active way to explore the area by water: canoeists and kayakers can use the Alte Sorge between WassermĂĽhle and FĂĽnfmĂĽhlen. Access restrictions apply in the adjacent nature reserve. Fishing on the Alte Sorge is associated with the Klein Bennebek angling club; the club has a hut or landing stage on the eastern bank. Before fishing, check locally whether access and permission are available.

Place Names and Leisure Ideas

Klein Bennebek includes localities with the names Potsdam, Berlin and Bellevue. A 3D course offers a range of distances and difficulty levels. This unusual mix of place names and leisure activities adds further ideas for planning a trip to the area’s natural attractions.

If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by choosing what you want to focus on: would you like your days to revolve around wildlife watching, cycling or water activities? This lets you tailor your search to the experiences that matter for your trip, without combining every activity into a single excursion itinerary.

Setting in Schleswig-Flensburg

The wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg also offers historical themes. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. The Idstedt Historical Memorial and Museum provides information about German-Danish history relating to the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. These themes complement Klein Bennebek’s focus on nature and landscape with a distinct historical perspective on the region.
