Wahlhausen lies on the border between Thuringia and Hesse. Bad Sooden-Allendorf is right next door, but is not part of Wahlhausen. The German Fairy Tale Route also passes through the village. This gives you several starting points for planning your trip: the border location, a themed route running right through Wahlhausen, and the Werra waterway.

What makes Wahlhausen distinctive

A tour here also brings together nature and history: “Beavers and stories - Discover beaver traces, learn about border history” starts and ends at the church car park in Wahlhausen. The title points to beaver traces and border history; the start and end point provides a specific reference for planning. There is also a place to put boats in and take them out of the water by the church. Another is at Camping Oase. Both locations are on the Werra waterway between Wahlhausen and Witzenhausen. Check the operating conditions at the access points before setting out.

The highlights mentioned have different starting points; the church, in particular, combines a tour’s start and end point with a place to access the water by boat.

Culture and history in the Eichsfeld

In the wider Eichsfeld destination, cultural attractions in their own right complement the local points of interest in Wahlhausen. Bodenstein Castle was first mentioned in official records in 1098 and stands on a spur of the Ohm Mountains. Regular guided tours explore the history of the former castle lords of Wintzingerode; visitors can also see the small chapel with its baptismal angel. Check the tour dates for your preferred visit. The Eichsfeld Museum, housed in the Baroque Jesuit college in Heilbad Heiligenstadt, explores the history, culture, religious life and folklore of the Eichsfeld across three floors. The themes differ: Bodenstein Castle focuses on its former lords and the chapel, while the museum covers the history and culture of the region as a whole.

The Eichsfeld Border Museum in Teistungen has a circular trail where original guard buildings, vehicle barriers and signal fences vividly convey the character of the former GDR border. Another event with a specific date is the annual hobbyhorse-riding tradition on Easter Monday in Dingelstädt: preschool children ride wooden hobbyhorses decorated with bells and colorful ribbons around St. Mary’s Church. Its fixed date makes this tradition a distinctive regional consideration when planning a trip around Easter.

Hiking, cycling and views

Those who want to focus on outdoor activities will find other clearly distinct themes in the Eichsfeld. The Dün and Iberg hills around Heilbad Heiligenstadt offer excellent opportunities for long hikes on certified TOP trails. The Leine-Heide Cycle Route begins in Leinefelde and runs all the way to Hamburg. These two routes offer different ways to explore the region actively: hiking in the named uplands or cycling a route that starts in Leinefelde and ends in Hamburg.

The viewpoints offer different perspectives, too. You can climb the west tower of Hanstein Castle ruins for sweeping views across the Eichsfeld and the surrounding forests in clear weather; when visibility is especially good, the view reaches as far as the Brocken in the Harz Mountains. Scharfenstein Castle has a viewpoint on its terrace and a 20-meter-high tower completed in 2016. From there, the panorama takes in the Upper Leine Valley, the Eichsfeld Basin, the Ohm Mountains and the eastern Dün; on a clear day, you can also see the Harz Mountains. Views at both locations depend on the weather. Culture lovers can also take a walk in Duderstadt along its completely preserved medieval ramparts, beneath old lime and chestnut trees.

When choosing accommodation, you can therefore distinguish between two levels: Wahlhausen, with its specific connections to its border location, the Fairy Tale Route and the Werra waterway; and other cultural and nature-related themes explicitly associated with the Eichsfeld. If the local attractions in Wahlhausen shape your itinerary, focus your accommodation search there. If other regional themes are your priority, compare the places that matter for the experiences you have planned.
