Endschütz lies in the Fuchsbachtal, a side valley of the Elstertal. The former Endschütz manor estate lies on the southwestern edge of the village; the Expo Revitalization Trail also runs through the village. This offers two distinct starting points for planning your trip: a long history as a manor estate and a trail that passes through Endschütz.

A manor estate spanning several periods

The history of the former manor estate dates back to the Middle Ages. The complex includes the former manor house, the farmyard and the estate park. The manor house was probably built around 1800. It is a two-storey, rendered solid masonry building with a slate-covered mansard hipped roof. The house’s presumed construction date represents a significantly later period than the estate’s medieval origins.

The surviving interior furnishings also tell of several building phases. Original features from the time of construction and the fixed interior fittings dating from around 1900 have largely been preserved. These include stucco ceilings, doors, floors and coloured stained-glass windows.

Estate park and trail

The estate park is laid out as a small landscaped park with two ponds and a mausoleum. Alongside the manor house’s architecture, these specific features provide a distinct landscape accent. While the manor house’s design and interior furnishings reflect different periods, the ponds and mausoleum define the description of the park.

The Expo Revitalization Trail also runs through Endschütz. It offers a different way to experience the village than the manor estate: here, the focus is on a trail that passes through Endschütz; there, on a historic ensemble comprising a manor house, farmyard and estate park. If you plan your trip around particular themes, you can distinguish between the trail, the history of the manor estate and the designed park landscape.

Culture in Greiz: exhibitions, crafts and parks

Since 2010, a permanent exhibition in the Upper Castle in Greiz has explored the history of the Vogts, lords, imperial counts and imperial princes of Reuß, as well as the small-state residential culture associated with them. The museum in the Upper Castle also offers a multimedia historical experience, with a computer-animated history of the building and an interactive journey through time. Historical topics are thus presented in different ways.

The Lower Castle in Greiz houses a museum and a textile demonstration workshop. Established in 1998, the workshop showcases the production and history of the Greiz textile industry; children and adults can take part in the manual production process. This provides a different focus from Endschütz’s architectural and manor history: here, crafts and textile history are brought to life through the production process.

The Summer Palace and Greiz Park are also part of Greiz’s cultural character. The Summer Palace was built as a summer residence for the princes of the Elder Line of Reuß and is one of the earliest Neoclassical buildings in Central Germany. Greiz Park lies at the foot of the wooded castle hill and is a 19th-century landscaped park; the entire complex is designated a national cultural monument. Compared with the small estate park in Endschütz, both the park described and its historical context are different.

Planning your trip around different interests

When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide which themes matter most to you: Endschütz is known for its former manor estate, its architecture, its small estate park and its location in the Fuchsbachtal. Greiz offers different cultural attractions, including castle exhibitions, textile history, the Summer Palace and the park. Choose your destination according to which of these interests matters most for your trip.
