Bischofrod on the southwestern slope of the Kleiner Thüringer Wald
Accommodation in Bischofrod
Together with the district of Keulrod, Bischofrod is a small village on the southwestern slope of the Kleiner Thüringer Wald. Its extensive network of hiking trails, the Weißbach stream and its local history give your stay a clear focus.
Panoramic views from the southwestern slope
From Bischofrod, the panoramic views stretch across the southwestern foothills of the Thüringer Wald to the Gleichberge, the mountains of the Vorder- and Hinterrhön, and the Thüringer Wald itself. The vista thus encompasses both the foothills and several named mountain regions. The Thüringer Wald defines the village’s location on its southwestern slope and is also part of the panorama; the Gleichberge and the Vorder- and Hinterrhön extend the view beyond it.
Hiking along the Weißbach
Bischofrod has an extensive network of hiking trails. Hikers can relax along the Rennsteig-Dolmar-Weg and at the many attractive habitats along the Weißbach. This means there is both a named hiking trail and the streamside habitats to explore outdoors. Seating areas and shelters along the hiking trails invite you to stop and rest.
Park, stream and panoramic trail
Bischofrod has a small park with a pond fed by a tributary of the Weißbach. A panoramic trail follows the stream meadow from the park to a playground. Together, the park, stream and trail form a cohesive local landscape, without requiring a single viewpoint. The playground on the panoramic trail has a pergola and a barbecue area and is considered a place for young and old alike.
Local history and tradition
The village’s founding tradition and its first documented mention are two distinct aspects of its history. Bischofrod was probably founded at the instigation of a bishop about 900 years ago; the first documentary mention of the village dates to 1262. The first documentary record also refers to two mills: by that time, the Count of Henneberg had pledged them to the church of Veßra Monastery.
The Weißbachquellfest is one of Bischofrod’s local traditional celebrations. The festivities bring people together in the festival tent or community hall. No current festival date is specified; the celebration offers a glimpse of local tradition in its own right.
More to explore in the Hildburghausen district
The wider travel destination of the Hildburghausen district opens up additional landscape and cultural themes. The district is a significant part of the Thüringer Wald recreational region. Its landscapes include an unbroken forest area in the Thüringer Wald Nature Park and the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve.
The museums also offer a range of different focuses. The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra is a 6-hectare open-air museum with four themed areas: monastic history; half-timbered architecture and everyday life in the Henneberg region; and agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg presents the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present. Its permanent exhibition is arranged as a route through the entire fortress. Visitors learn how castle construction changed from one era to the next and get to know Veste Heldburg.
