Dornburg-Camburg brings together several distinct experiences for a stay: the Dornburg Castles and their gardens, views over the Saale Valley, walking and hiking trails, and Camburg culture. The destinations below offer specific points of reference to help you plan.

Castle Gardens and Hillside Views

The three Dornburg Castles stand on a rugged rock high above the Saale Valley. Their gardens cover about four hectares and comprise several areas: a landscape garden at the Renaissance Castle, a geometrically designed garden in front of the Rococo Castle, and the orchard and meadow garden at the Old Castle. Terraced paths connect the gardens on the steep hillside and offer far-reaching views over the Saale Valley. The different garden styles and the views come together to create an appealing setting.

The historical designs also vary from garden to garden. The Old Castle has orchards and grass gardens dating from the 1830s. The garden at the Rococo Castle is French in style; a park based on the English model was laid out west of the Renaissance Castle between 1826 and 1828. Those interested in garden design will therefore find not just one style, but several clearly distinct areas, each with its own relationship to the castles.

Hiking Trails Around Camburg

Walks and hikes over and around the Wachtberg and Matzberg offer views of Camburg and the Saale. Well-signposted circular trails pass through the Schleuskauer Grund and the Mollschützer Graben. Another option is the “Saale Horizontale” panoramic trail: it passes through Dornburg and is 71 kilometres long in total. This means you can choose between walks on the hills with viewpoints, circular trails through two named landscape areas, and a longer panoramic route. Check the current condition of the trails before setting out.

Swimming and Trips on the Water

Camburg outdoor swimming pool has a 5,000 m² swimming pool, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground and a large sunbathing lawn. As a seasonal option, it is distinct from the routes along the Saale; check the current opening hours before planning a visit. The water routes also vary: raft trips run from Camburg to Großheringen, while canoe trips go as far as Blütengrund Naumburg. If you are planning a trip, check in advance whether and when departures are currently scheduled.

Museum and Equestrian Tradition

The Camburg City Museum is housed in the Amtshaus, built in 1742. Its exhibits include Stone Age hand axes, tools and weapons from various cultural groups, and items documenting the town’s history up to the recent past. The collection thus spans everything from early tools to the town’s development, complementing the castles and gardens with a historical perspective on Camburg.

Horse breeding has been practised for centuries in Zöthen, a district of Dornburg-Camburg; horse-related tournaments and festivals are also held there. This is a different cultural focus from the museum collection or the gardens. If you plan to attend a particular tournament or festival, check the event dates in advance.
