Discover Roßdorf: history, church art and hiking trails
Accommodation in Roßdorf
Roßdorf combines the memory of a battle in 1866 with a church full of architectural details and two hiking trails with different routes. The town is in the Thuringian part of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Cultural history and hiking are therefore two key themes to consider when planning a stay.
The Battle of Nebelberg and Roßdorf’s church art
On 4 July 1866, Bavarian troops on the Austrian side and Prussian troops fought near Roßdorf at Nebelberg. Hundreds of people were killed or injured. A sandstone obelisk in the Roßdorf cemetery, the Bavarian Monument, commemorates the fallen Bavarian soldiers. A small museum in Roßdorf provides information about the Battle of Nebelberg and is also known as the 1866 Museum. If you are planning a visit, please check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.
The Church of the Holy Trinity reveals another chapter in the town’s history. It is primarily a Baroque building and was extensively renovated from 1682 to 1733, with two window bays added to the east. The tower was also rebuilt during this renovation—on the church’s unusual north side. The long, single-nave hall is notable for its depth; figurative paintings adorn the barrel vault and the balustrades of the galleries, which run around three sides on two levels. The church’s historic furnishings also include an octagonal baptismal font dating from 1674.
Carl Wagner is also associated with Roßdorf: the exhibition at Gutshof Roßdorf includes several reproductions of important oil paintings and some original prints by the artist. Alongside the church’s architectural history, painting and printmaking are therefore distinct themes in the town. If you are planning to visit the exhibition, it is advisable to check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors.
Two hiking trails with different routes
The Wagner-Mosengeil Memorial Trail commemorates Ernst Wagner and runs from Roßdorf via the Pleß to Breitungen. The route is 14 km long and starts at the Roßdorf vicarage. It first follows Kirchweg, Badegasse, Schlosspark, Salzunger Weg, Hohe Straße and Eichberg to Stoffelskuppe. It continues via Roßdorfer Tor, Roßdorfer Ausspanne, Hohlweg, Kleine Pleßwiese, Pleßkuppe, Roter Stock and Breiter Weg to Breitungen. Along the way are also the turnoffs for Helmers and the Wittgenthal restaurant, Knollbach, the Breitungen Landwehr, the path towards the railway station and the Breitunger Seen nature reserve. Other named points along the route include the church, forestry office, market, Zehntmauer and Zur Linde restaurant, as well as the Frauenbreitungen vicarage.
The Roßdorf 2 circular hiking trail has a different layout: the 12 km loop starts at the Bürgerhaus and runs via the park, Roßdorfer Kutte, Salzunger Weg (Wagner-Mosgeil-Weg), Stoffelskuppe, Hoher Rain, Bernshäuser Kutte, Bernshausen, Horn, Langer Rain and Bernshäuser Straße before returning to Roßdorf. This distinction matters when planning your day and accommodation: the loop returns to Roßdorf, while the memorial trail continues to Breitungen. For detailed tour planning, check the current boundaries of the biosphere reserve.
More to explore in the wider Schmalkalden-Meiningen destination
In the wider Schmalkalden-Meiningen destination, other cultural and culinary experiences complement Roßdorf’s local history. In Schmalkalden, visitors can see how nougat is made at the Viba Nougat-Welt’s glass-walled manufactory. Hands-on confectionery courses invite you to pour chocolate, decorate nougat and create pralines. Course times and booking conditions may change, so check these details before making plans.
The Neue Hütte blast furnace museum in Schmalkalden also offers a contrast between craftsmanship and industrial history. The blast furnace complex dates from 1835; until 1924, locally mined iron ore was smelted there using charcoal to produce pig iron. The exhibitions explore the region of Schmalkalden’s almost 1,300-year history of iron and steel goods production, including the well-known “Schmalkalder Artikel.” A 45-minute guided tour covers the history and operation of the blast furnace.
