Discover Buttlar
Accommodation in Buttlar
Two very different trails and an altar dating from 1712 offer visitors concrete points of interest during a stay in Buttlar. Here, themes relating to monuments and old fruit varieties meet a nature trail and a work of art in the Church of the Nativity of Mary.
Two Trails with Different Themes
The “Rediscovering the Old” themed trail starts in the center of Buttlar and connects historic monuments with an orchard trail. The focus there is on old, regional fruit varieties, some of which have fallen into obscurity. The trail thus brings together two distinct themes: the history of monuments and fruit varieties.
The “Sängerwiese” nature trail has a different focus: it leads from Buttlar to Bermbach. Nearby, the route runs along the southern slopes of Michelsberg, Kleiner Langer Berg and Wachkoppe. The trail also has a specific history: the nature conservation group at the school in Buttlar created it between 1975 and 1978; it was extensively redesigned between 1995 and 1997.
The Church of the Nativity of Mary adds an art-historical detail to the trails. Its altar is a work by the sculptor Johann Neudecker the Elder, dating from 1712. Together, these offer different ways to discover Buttlar: a themed trail featuring fruit varieties and monuments, a nature trail between two towns, and a historic work in the church.
More Themes in the Wartburg District
The wider Wartburg District offers further cultural and landscape themes. For architectural history, the more than 830-year-old Creuzburg Castle is a notable landmark. Its ring wall extends for more than 340 meters, enclosing an area of 7,400 square meters. The castle is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes.
The park at Altenstein Palace has around 20 kilometers of paths, including a 4.3-kilometer circular walking trail. The palace is also home to a Brahms memorial. Its exhibition includes letters and printed works documenting the close ties between Johannes Brahms and Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. The park trails and music history offer two different points of interest there. At around 10 kilometers, the sculpture trail is longer than the 4.3-kilometer circular walking trail in the park at Altenstein Palace: it runs from the sculpture park in Behringen to Hütscheroda and back.
The museums also offer different perspectives. The Werra Valley Museum in Gerstungen Castle presents the region’s history in 22 exhibition rooms and brings traditional crafts to life. Point Alpha is an authentic Cold War site; a permanent exhibition in the House on the Border presents the history of the division of Germany.
You can tailor your search to the mix of nature, architectural history and exhibitions you’re looking for.
