Lehnstedt: Valley, Cycling Route History and Feininger Themes
Accommodation in Lehnstedt
A flat valley, cycling route history and Feininger themes give Lehnstedt its own distinct character. If you are planning a broader stay, you can also include the hiking, cultural and culinary offerings of the Weimarer Land in your travel plans.
A valley village with its own cultural connections
Lehnstedt lies at an elevation of 300 m in a flat valley that runs from west to east. The shape of the valley is the village’s most distinctive landscape feature. Lehnstedt is also one of the places with display boards dedicated to Feininger themes.
Cycling route history in two stages
The Thuringian Cities Chain long-distance cycle route offers another specific point of reference. In 2020, the route between Mellingen and Lehnstedt was surfaced with bitumen. The second construction phase between Lehnstedt and Kleinschwabhausen was completed in autumn 2021. This section took cyclists along another stretch away from the county road K 306, which was heavily trafficked at the time. The two milestones therefore differ both in the sections they concern and in their nature: the first describes a bituminous surface upgrade, while the second marks the completion of another construction phase. If you are planning a cycling trip today, check current route conditions.
Hiking and cycling in the Weimarer Land
The wider destination of the Weimarer Land offers other options for active days out. The Thuringian Three Towers Trail is a circular hiking route through the protected landscape of the Middle Ilm Valley in the southern Weimarer Land. It links the Paulinenturm near Bad Berka, the Hainturm in the Belvedere Forest near Weimar, and the Carolinenturm near Blankenhain. The Goethe Adventure Trail offers another combination of nature and culture: it follows Goethe’s route to Charlotte von Stein, features twelve stops combining nature and culture, and connects Weimar with Großkochberg.
For Nordic walking, the VitalParcours Bad Berka routes offer varied landscapes. The four routes in total were certified as quality trails by the German Nordic Walking Association in 2011. Cycling trips can also be planned differently in the Weimarer Land than Lehnstedt’s section-specific cycling route history: the cycle routes between Weimar, Apolda and Bad Sulza combine nature, cultural history and regional cuisine, and are suitable for multi-day tours.
Choose culture and history to suit your interests
The museums in the Weimarer Land focus on different subjects. The GlockenStadtMuseum Apolda explores the cultural history of bells and the region’s textile industry. In Bad Berka, the permanent exhibition at Coudray House covers 200 years of the development of the spa and healthcare sector. The Bad Sulza Saltworks and Local History Museum presents the tradition of salt production, which dates back to 1046. The Thuringian Open-Air Museum Hohenfelden offers a different perspective on history, with more than 40 historic buildings dating from the 16th to the 20th century.
Further regional themes include art and literature: since 1995, Kunsthaus Apolda Avantgarde has presented exhibitions by international and regional artists. Its events also include talks, auctions, book readings and film screenings; dates vary. Wielandgut Oßmannstedt includes a memorial site and a multimedia museum about Wieland’s life, work and influence. The renovated estate is open to visitors. Check current opening hours and event dates before planning a specific visit.
Regional cuisine as an experience
Cuisine can also shape your travel plans. At the Thuringian Dumpling Museum, seminars or training sessions for up to 80 people can be booked throughout the year. At the dumpling cooking school and the potato pancake school, you can prepare Thuringian classics. These activities are subject to booking and availability on specific dates. Together with the cycle routes between Weimar, Apolda and Bad Sulza, which combine regional cuisine with nature and cultural history, they offer another way to give a stay in the Weimarer Land a particular focus.
Find accommodation to match your travel plans
When looking for accommodation, start by deciding whether you want to focus on Lehnstedt—with its valley, Feininger connection and cycling route history—or plan visits to several places in the Weimarer Land. For a wider regional trip, you can use your preferred mix of hiking, cycling, culture and cuisine as a guide for your search.
