Vollersroda tells its story through its layout: the village has the form typical of High Medieval foundations—a regularly laid-out street village clearly demarcated from its surroundings. The church’s position is characteristic. It is not integrated into the row of houses, but stands centrally in the village where the rows of houses widen to form a square. The layout and the building are thus visibly connected.

A street village with a distinctive centre

Vollersroda lies southwest of Belvedere Park at an altitude of 330 metres. The village’s distinctive layout gives it a clear spatial character: the rows of houses form the street village, while the square-like widening places the church at its centre. Those interested in local history will find a striking example here of how a settlement’s layout and the position of an important building work together.

Church, local history and Feininger

The church on DorfstraĂźe was built in 1775. Together with its furnishings, churchyard and war memorial, it is listed as an individual monument in the Weimarer Land heritage register. The first documented mention of the village is also precisely dated: in 1262, Vollersroda appeared in a deed issued by Volrad von Kranichfeld for Oberweirnar Monastery, under the place name Volradshrode.

The building’s history is complemented by a connection to art history. Lyonel Feininger painted a total of four pictures of the church in Vollersroda. The same place can therefore be viewed from several perspectives: through its medieval village layout, the church built in 1775 and the artistic interest in this building.

Cycling the Feininger Cycle Route

The well-signposted, 27.8-kilometre Feininger Cycle Route runs from Weimar via Niedergrunstedt, Gelmeroda, Possendorf and Vollersroda to Mellingen. In the southern Weimarer Land, the route links several of Lyonel Feininger’s favourite subjects. Vollersroda is one of the places along the route; here, the connection to art is also tangible in the four pictures of the church. The route thus brings together regional exploration and art history without reducing the village’s history to cycling. Check the current route conditions before setting out.

Landscape and community traditions

The landscape, too, has a history of use: peat was cut in Vollersroda in the 19th century; the area in question was later converted into ponds. This change adds a historical trace of landscape development to the village’s built environment. Local history also preserves the memory of community events: the inn’s hall was used for the Vollersroda Kirmes (church consecration fair), held every autumn.

Further perspectives in the wider Weimarer Land destination

If you would like to choose other themes for your trip in addition to Vollersroda, you can explore the wider Weimarer Land destination. The Thuringian Three Towers Trail is a circular hiking route through the protected landscape of the central Ilm Valley in the southern Weimarer Land. It links the Paulinenturm near Bad Berka, the Hainturm in Belvedere Forest near Weimar and the Carolinenturm near Blankenhain. Its character differs from that of the Feininger Cycle Route: here, the focus is on a circular hike, protected landscapes and three named towers.

The cultural attractions of the Weimarer Land also offer a range of different experiences. The Thuringian Open-Air Museum in Hohenfelden features more than 40 historic buildings dating from the 16th to the 20th century. At the Wieland Estate in Oßmannstedt, a memorial and multimedia museum offer insights into Wieland’s life, work and influence; the restored estate is open to visitors. For specific plans, it is advisable to check the latest visitor information. The Goethe Adventure Trail follows Goethe’s route to Charlotte von Stein, connects Weimar and Großkochberg, and offers twelve experience stations combining nature and culture.

Choose what to explore based on the kind of trip you have in mind.
