Ebringen brings together protected slopes, vineyards and the old pilgrimage path to Berghauser Chapel. In the Jennetal Nature Reserve, the Sumsergarten is known for its abundance of orchids; other highlights include a historic castle, now used as the town hall, and a signposted vineyard loop. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip: nature, vineyard landscapes, pilgrimage history and local history.

Protected slopes and vineyard trails

The slopes around Berghauser Chapel have been protected across an area of about 150 hectares since 1996. The Sumsergarten is the core zone of the Jennetal Nature Reserve and is known for its abundance of orchids. Ebringen’s natural attractions therefore range from a protected landscape to a distinctive botanical feature.

The signposted vineyard loop starts at Winzerhof Ebringen, passes the “ReSidence” pavilion of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and ends back at Winzerhof after about three kilometres. The pavilion serves as an example of sustainable construction; information boards explain the grape varieties grown here. The loop thus combines the landscape with two distinct themes: architecture and viticulture.

The Stations of the Cross trail to Berghauser Chapel

The Stations of the Cross trail from Ebringen to Berghauser Chapel is an old pilgrimage path documented since the early 17th century. It comprises eight chapels and is about 2.3 kilometres long. From the parish church, the trail passes through RottenmĂĽnsterhof and continues through the vineyards to Berghauser Chapel. The originals of the former 1751 Stations of the Cross can be seen in the parish church. Starting at the parish church, where the originals are on display, gives the route an additional historical connection.

If you are choosing by route length, the Stations of the Cross trail, at about 2.3 kilometres, is shorter than the vineyard loop, at about three kilometres. In terms of subject matter, the chapels and pilgrimage history contrast with the grape-variety information boards and the pavilion as an example of sustainable construction. This makes it easy to compare the two routes by theme and approximate distance.

Local history and practical route planning

Ebringen Castle adds another historical dimension: it was built between 1711 and 1713 on the site of the former provost’s building and is now used as the town hall.

Away from the marked trails, you may move around only in the immediate vicinity of Berghauser Chapel within the Berghauser Matten protected area. Plan your route with this restriction in mind and check local guidance before your visit.

When choosing accommodation in Ebringen, the interests mentioned above can help guide you: nature, pilgrimage history and the vineyard loop offer different focuses for planning your trip.
