Au in the Hexental: forest, scenic heights and history
Accommodation in Au
Au between city and nature
Au lies in the Hexental valley between Schönberg and Schauinsland, just outside Freiburg. Despite its proximity to the city, the town has preserved its natural character. Au is still shaped by numerous farms, most of them dairy farms. Nature and agriculture are therefore two of the town’s defining features.
Forest, scenic heights and an adventure trail
Gentle climbs lead from Au to the surrounding heights. From there, views stretch towards the Freiburg basin, the Kaiserstuhl and the Schauinsland massif. At the same time, forest covers 40 percent of the municipal area and invites you to go for a walk. You can choose between a trail climbing to the viewpoints and a stroll through the forest.
The Hexental adventure trail is a specific point of reference for planning a hike. It is about ten kilometres long and follows a historic route from Au to Bollschweil. Along the section in Au, information boards explain forest ecosystems, animals, tree species and forestry. There are also twelve life-size carved woodland animals along the trail. Its approximate length helps you assess it as a longer route option; its themes also give the hike a particular focus. For families who enjoy exploring nature topics together, the information boards and figures can provide concrete conversation starters.
Local history across different eras
Au was first mentioned together with a church in 861; a vineyard was first recorded in 868. A chapel was built later: it was constructed in Au in 1668 and consecrated in 1669. A battle took place in Au on 3 August 1644. These dates point to different aspects of the town’s history—early records, winegrowing, the construction of a chapel and a historical event.
Auer Market: produce and community
The Auer Market brings together food and social interaction. It offers seasonal vegetables, traditionally produced meat products, bread and baked goods, homemade Mediterranean specialities and wines from local producers. The market also serves wine and acts as a local meeting place. The selection may vary depending on the season and vendors; market arrangements may also change. If there are particular products you are interested in, check what is currently available before your visit.
Getting here and choosing accommodation
You can reach Au by car, public transport or bicycle. The Auer Market adds a local food and social element to these interests. This makes Au worth considering if these experiences suit your planned stay.
