Loffenau reveals itself in many different ways: Late medieval frescoes tell the story of the town, a bridge and staircase provide access to the Laufbach Waterfalls, and erosion and sandstone have shaped the Devil’s Chambers east of town. Viewpoints and waymarked trails add to these discoveries. This allows you to plan your stay around the topics that interest you most.

Local history at the church and village square

The Holy Cross Church is home to late medieval frescoes from the old Loffenau church. Only the choir of the former church building remains; it forms the lower part of the present-day tower. The frescoes and surviving section of the building offer two specific ways to explore the town’s history.

The new village square in the Kirchwiesen is also part of the townscape: It has won an award and blends into its surroundings. The observatory on the Grenzertplatte was officially inaugurated on October 4, 2008. Together, these places show different sides of Loffenau—from its established townscape and historical landmarks to an observatory with a recorded inauguration date.

Sandstone formations, views and water

The Devil’s Chambers lie east of Loffenau, not far from the Großer Loch. These cave-like erosion formations belong to the Eck Formation of the Lower Buntsandstein. Softer sandstone eroded beneath a harder, silicified layer of Buntsandstein, which now forms the roof of the formations. Anyone interested in the landscape not only as a backdrop but also in how it was formed will find a fascinating geological feature here. Loffenau and its surrounding landscape are in the Black Forest National Park Centre/North.

The Sonnenlaube on Pfarrberg is a viewpoint offering both views and shade. At the Laufbach Waterfalls, a bridge with a viewing platform and a new staircase provides access as part of the Kleine Dorfrunde. In certain weather conditions, the paths there can be slippery; sure-footedness is required. The viewpoint and waterfall therefore appeal to different interests, while the paths at the waterfalls come with a specific condition for visiting.

Trails and activities for different interests

The Kleine Dorfrunde includes a visit to the Laufbach Waterfalls. The Panoramarunde offers a different route: From the spa gardens, it follows Dorfstraße for a short distance to Kreuzstich, then continues toward the Bergle viewpoint. The route descriptions use different starting points and landmarks—the waterfalls on one route, and the spa gardens, Kreuzstich and Bergle on the other.

Another described trail leads to the MichelsrankhĂĽtte. From the area behind the TeufelsmĂĽhlturm, follow the zigzag path down approximately 100 metres in elevation to reach it. This figure describes the descent; the route can thus be distinguished from the two trails with their stated landmarks.

Loffenau also offers specific options for active visitors: Two paragliding launch sites operate at Teufelsmühle. The western site is at an elevation of 900 metres, and the northwestern one at 846 metres. The two sites therefore differ in both orientation and elevation. On a different scale, the Wassertretstelle in the Löchle/Holzwiesen area was established around 50 years ago and is still used as a recreational facility by children and local residents.

The places and topics described can help you decide what to focus on during your stay and then find suitable accommodation for your trip.
