Dettingen unter Teck brings together several specific points of interest for a trip: the first documented evidence of a church, dating from 1269; Stone Age flint finds at Käppele; and traces of five castle sites. As part of the landscape classification of the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve, the town is assigned to the Albvorland. The nearby Hörnle and Hohenbol add distinctive landscape features. This makes it possible to explore local history, geological features and regional themes together.

Church history and traces of the past

The first documented evidence of a church in Dettingen unter Teck dates from 1269; the name “St. George’s Church” (St. Georgskirche) has been documented since 1303. Hundreds of Stone Age flints were found around the Käppeleslinde on Käppele. These finds date from far earlier than the documented church records, adding another layer of history.

Traces of five castle sites have also been preserved within Dettingen’s municipal boundaries: Schlössle, Schloßberg, Bol, Mansberg and Tiefenbach. Dettingen thus brings together a range of historical evidence: documented dates and names, archaeological finds, and preserved traces of several castle sites.

Landscape features and the Höhenpfad trail

Nearby lies the Hörnle, a spur of the Teckberg offering views of the Albtrauf escarpment and the Three Imperial Mountains. Also nearby is Hohenbol, an extinct volcano with a distinctive grove of black pines known as “Zoabürscht”. These landscape features are quite different: at the Hörnle, the focus is on views of several distinctive landscapes, while at Hohenbol it is the volcanic origins and the named pine grove.

The Höhenpfad trail passes through a stretch of woodland that locals call the Ho-Chi-Minh-Pfad, then follows this path back to Dettingen. If you are planning a hike, check the current conditions beforehand.
