Lenningen offers a variety of well-marked hiking trails and a landscape featuring dripstone caves, climbing and scenic cliffs, castle ruins and a moor. There are also tangible traces of architectural and local history. For planning your trip, it helps to sort through the different highlights and take snow conditions into account for winter activities.

Hiking and winter activities at your own pace

If you want to explore Lenningen on foot, you’ll find well-marked hiking trails. The landscape includes natural features such as caves and cliffs, as well as castle ruins and the moor. This lets you treat exercise, nature and cultural history as different interests during your stay, without trying to fit everything into a single outing.

In winter, Schopfloch has prepared ski slopes, drag lifts and groomed cross-country ski trails. Whether these facilities can be used and the trails are groomed depends on seasonal snow conditions. The Schopflocher Alb also has cleared winter walking trails: examples include the routes from Pfulb to Bahnhöfle and from the Gutenberger Höhle car park towards Ochsenwang. If snowfall continues, clearance is not guaranteed.

Different conditions therefore matter when choosing a winter activity: for slopes and cross-country ski trails, seasonal snow conditions are key, while continued snowfall can affect cleared walking trails. When planning your travel dates, it’s worth keeping these specific differences in mind.

Caves, moorland and nature conservation

Gutenberger Höhle is a karst cave with attractive dripstone formations. It is around 200 metres long and consists of six chambers.

Schopflocher Torfmoor is a moor with moorland flora, located on the karstified, water-permeable Swabian Alb. In the Upper Lenningen Valley, the focus is on preserving a contiguous, near-natural area with diverse habitats. These habitats are important for rare and, in some cases, highly endangered animal and plant species.

Architectural and local history

The church in Schopfloch is a Neoclassical hall church dating from 1782, with galleries on three sides. The Schlössle was built by the Schilling von Cannstatt family between 1593 and 1596 as a distinctive late-medieval manor house. The Schlössle house museum displays chance finds discovered during the renovation of the Renaissance building.

Burg Gutenberg also offers a tangible connection to local history: it was first mentioned in 1285 as the property of the Dukes of Teck. The church, Schlössle and castle offer different ways to explore history—from architecture and the people who commissioned the buildings to written records. If you’re travelling with children, you can decide together whether nature, outdoor activities or historic buildings are of greatest interest.

Activities and trip planning

The cycle path from Brucken to Gutenberg is considered suitable for wheelchairs and handcycles. You can return by train from Oberlenningen. For trips to the Lenningen Museum, VVS day tickets may be an option, including network tickets and tickets for one to four zones. Check current ticket options and conditions before travelling.

The different themes can also help you choose where to stay: first consider whether hiking, winter activities or architectural and local history will shape your stay, and what time of year you plan to travel.
