Ottenbach is well suited to a stay shaped by hiking trails, valley views and cultural stops along the way. There are hiking and cycling routes in Ottenbach and the surrounding area; the Ottenbach Valley is considered suitable for many outdoor activities. The pilgrimage trails add religious sites and artistic interpretations to the hiking experience. Depending on your preferred route length and interests, you can choose between the St. Sebastian Trail, the Franciscan Trail and the Cyriakus Trail.

Three trails with different highlights

The Ottenbach Franciscan Trail is a circular route with ten stations. Works of art and features of the landscape interpret the Canticle of the Sun by Francis of Assisi; newly created art installations include works made from metal, stone, plastics and wood. The route leads from Ottenbach to the Rehgebirge hills and back via Kitzen to St. Sebastian’s Church. It combines hiking with stops where art and landscape share the spotlight.

The Franciscan Trail has an elevation difference of 150 metres and takes around two and a half to three and a half hours, depending on how long you spend at the stations. After Kitzhölzle, a steep climb begins on a farm track, so the trail is only partly suitable for pushchairs. Burgundy-coloured signs mark the route, and parking is available at the church.

At 5.6 kilometres and around an hour and a half, the St. Sebastian Trail is a shorter option. There are no steep climbs to tackle along this trail, and several benches invite you to rest. The Eichholz forest playground is also a place to take a break along the route. By comparison, the Franciscan Trail allows more time for its ten stations, while the St. Sebastian Trail offers a shorter hike.

The Cyriakus Trail is 9.7 kilometres long and starts at the car park by the municipal hall at Im Buchs in Ottenbach. It leads through gentle hills and wide pastures in the Ottenbach Valley. Along the way are the Lourdes Chapel at Saurenhof and the grotto near Kitzen. These waypoints give the tour its own distinctive religious character.

Valley Views and Vantage Points

The views also differ between the trails. From the St. Sebastian Trail, you can look out over the eastern side of the Ottenbach Valley. The Franciscan Trail offers views of Hohenstaufen and Rechberg; on a clear day, the view towards the Albtrauf escarpment extends as far as Teck Castle. The wider Ottenbach Valley landscape includes 45 individual farmsteads. The different outlooks make choosing between the trails a matter of which side of the landscape you would like to experience along the way.

The walking times help with planning your day: the St. Sebastian Trail is a shorter hike, while on the Franciscan Trail you can factor in time spent at the stations. For the Cyriakus Trail, its length and the chapels and grotto mentioned along the way help guide your choice. This makes it easy to distinguish between the three hikes by time, distance and interests, without treating them as interchangeable routes.

Getting There and Finding Accommodation

Ottenbach can be reached by bus from Göppingen via Eislingen and Salach. Check the current timetable before travelling. For navigating on foot, it is worth noting the different starting points: the Cyriakus Trail starts at the car park by the municipal hall at Im Buchs, while parking for the Franciscan Trail is available at the church.

If you are looking for accommodation for a hiking-focused stay, you can choose Ottenbach as your search location and compare the trails by distance, time and interests. The St. Sebastian Trail is a good option for a shorter outing; if you would like to include art installations, consider the Franciscan Trail, where the time spent at each station can vary. At 9.7 kilometres, the Cyriakus Trail offers a different experience, with its own waypoints.
