Ailingen invites you to include its landscape and local history in your travel plans. Trails through orchards, gentle hills and the unspoilt Rotach Valley invite you to stroll, hike and go walking. There are also historic buildings, orchards and a range of leisure activities.

Trails, landscapes and views

The Haldenberg and Horach offer panoramic views of the Alps. Horach is also a drumlin formed by glaciers in the northern Lake Constance area. A hidden lookout point on a water reservoir offers views of Ailingen and the mountains from Horach. The sweeping panorama and the formation of the landscape are two distinct points of interest.

The Ailingen Panorama Trail passes Höhlerösch, a protected hay meadow. The trail connects its route with a distinctive type of landscape, while paths through orchards, gentle hills and the Rotach Valley invite you to stroll, hike and go walking.

Local history in buildings and exhibitions

The Haldenberg Chapel was designed and built in 1892 by carpenter Johann Heinzelmann. It is a popular destination for an outing on the 479-metre-high Haldenberg. The Old Ailingen Rectory was built in 1710, featuring unusually elaborate and imposing half-timbering. St. John the Baptist Church tells a different architectural story: it was rebuilt in 1959 after the older church, built around 1500, became too small.

Ittenhausen Mill also has a long, documented history: it was first mentioned in a document in 1198. Ittenhausen Museum offers a different focus. The City of Friedrichshafen makes it available to the Society for History and Local Heritage (Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Heimatpflege e. V.), which regularly uses it for exhibitions. Local stories thus range from an early documentary mention and different building phases to the society’s exhibition activities.

Orchards and leisure

There are 180 trees in the StreuObstGarten orchard at the Weilermühle leisure area; it also offers plenty of information about traditional orchard cultivation. The StreuObstGarten includes a leisure area with barbecue spots and a playground. Ailingen’s wave pool has a diving facility and a water slide. Alongside the landscape and architectural history, orchards and specific leisure facilities are also topics in their own right.

More things to explore in the wider destination of Friedrichshafen

The wider destination of Friedrichshafen has more cultural attractions and trails to offer. The Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen brings 100 years of aerospace history to life. Guided tours explore the development of aviation and the pioneering achievements of engineer Claude Dornier. The Friedrichshafen School Museum presents the history of education in Germany across three floors, beginning in the Middle Ages.

The Friedrichshafen section of the Lake Constance Nature Trail follows the lakeside promenade from the mouth of the Rotach to the Castle Church. Its 20 information panels cover topics including weather phenomena, local history, bird migration, exotic plants in the city garden and the feathered companions found in everyday city life. The 14-kilometre Zeppelin Trail runs through Friedrichshafen from the former Grenzhof brickworks, via Manzell and the city centre with its lakeside promenade, the Zeppelin shipyard site and Zeppelindorf, to the airport.

Friedrichshafen’s Seehasenfest is an annual festival celebrating children and local heritage. Its programme, which has changed little since the festival was founded in 1949, includes sporting competitions, a parade and an amusement park. Another seasonal option is a sightseeing cruise on the Seeschwalbe, a nostalgic mahogany boat. In good weather, cruises are offered from April to September along the lakeside promenade and past the Castle Pier and Castle Church. Check the current availability of cruises before you travel.

Then tailor your search to your specific plans for your stay.
